“The best of both worlds”
Reviewed October 29, 2013

A unique blend of boutique standards and homestay, western tastes, efficiency and cleanliness and eastern warmth , sensitivity and hospitality with truly the best of both worlds. Delicious food, generous portions, reasonable rates.Overall an excellent value for money. No doubt, one of the best guest houses/ small hotels in Sri Lanka.

Finding a great deal on agoda (approx. $18/night) I booked two nights here, but ended up staying four. As a backpacker, I don't know if I've ever stayed somewhere as nice, with such hospitable hosts, as this during my extensive Asia travels. Large, light, spotless rooms, a big balcony overlooking the hills, amazing home cooked meals, and Pathi and his family do everything they can to make you feel welcome and part of the family. I went on a 3 hour hike with Pathi through the hills and tea plantations, got great tips for the rest of my trip, and Pathi even organised an incredible deal on a safari in Yala for me.

Kandy itself didn't sell me much, so it was great being away from the noise and bustle of the city. It's only a 30 min walk/200rp tuk tuk into town, or if you're lucky as I was you could get dropped there whenever the family is heading in.

Definitely recommended!

Only downside, if I had to think of one? As a solo traveller staying in off season, I was the only person there half the time, but this just meant I got to chat to the family more and enjoy some much needed down time.

Located in the hill and a bit hard to find - this is one aspect that makes this home special.
Pathi was waiting for us on the road since was not easy to see in the night. There is also free tranfers from the train station - just need to arrange with Pathi.
A very warm place. The rooms are very new, simple and nice decoration, everything very clean.
Pathi , Suba and their son, Marresh, are excellent hosts.
We had only one night so first we had a delicious dinner prepared by them. The next day, early morning, Pathi took us for a 2 hour walk on the hills behind the house - with great views of the tea plantations.
We came back and did a cooking class with Suba, excellent cooker - then we enjoyed the meal we prepared!
Short but amazing stay! Strongly recommended.

We stayed in Hanthana House for 2 nights and overall we are happy we did. Just keep in mind that this is not a hotel but rather a privately owned house, and that the property is located a few kilometers away from the city center, in the green hills around Kandy. The relatively remote location means that there is no traffic so the area is very quiet (although dogs barking on the property during the night were rather annoying). Also the property overlooks green hilly areas with great birdwatching opportunities. The downside is that the road that leads to the property is very poorly kept (even by local standards), with steep parts and deep potholes. We arrived at night and the approach was a bit scary.

Our meals were excellent, and I particularly enjoyed the fresh fruit over breakfast. The property has wi-fi but it is very slow, to the point that it was impossible to use Skype voice. The place was very clean and the bed very comfortable, with a poster-bed conveniently covered by a bednet. There is no AC, but we slept very well nonetheless (during the summer).

Pathi and his family were excellent hosts and made us feel very comfortable sharing their home .The food served by Mrs Pathi was fabulous and much more authentic than anything we had in hotels. It was a delight sitting on the terrace watching all the birdlife and the walks we took from the house were spectacular. Would highly recommend the experience.

We stayed with Pathi and his family for 2 nights and very much enjoyed their hospitality. The food was delicious and a real highlight, while we enjoyed chatting with the children and watching the bird life. Pathi took us on great 2 hour walk from the house. I would certainly recommend a stay here.

Room Tip: No aircon in the room though there is a fan.

Since the previous reviews were written the Pathis no longer use the accommodation described and shown in the photos. They now have 3 brand new rooms, each with an en suite bathroom and access to a terrace, in their own home. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the spacious terrace overlooks a hillside alive with birds.
There is genuine, and delicious, home cooking (thank you Mrs Pathi) and the dining room is adjacent to the kitchen so you can see exactly what happens. The 2 children are charming, and the whole experience is unique.
The house is a little way out of town, high in the hills above Candy, so cooler and quieter than the city. Mr Pathi works with Tikalanka Tours (excellent) and can arrange meet and greet and transport at the station or Colombo Airport (or indeed anywhere on the island). He can also arrange local tours with first class drivers/guides. Our guide, Niroshan, was first class, efficient, knowledgeable, and with fluent English, a good driver, and willing to help in every way.
