Worth visiting to see the well-kept graves of so many young people, mainly men, who met their deaths in Sri Lanka due to the climate or disease.

“Garrison Cemetery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

A must stop place on any trip to Kandy. The grounds are beautifuly kept by the knowlegable Caretaker. It is a one stop history lesson of Colonialism. One of the most interesting graves i found was that of a Italian Sailor killed in 1944, im still trying to work out what the Italian Navy were doing Kandy at least 130km from the sea, in a british Colony

“Oasis in the Kandy traffic and tourist throngs”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2013 via mobile

One of the nicer places I have visited in Sri Lanka. It is free but donations are accepted for maintainence. The tombstones tell part of the colonial history of Sri Lanka, people that died young, were killed by elephants and malaria. The keeper showed us around and told us interesting stories of the people buried there. The cemetery is a quiet refuge from the mad traffic in Kandy.

“Well worth a visit”

Amazing history from the caretaker. Deaths from elephant stampedes, malaria, typhoid and a horrific accident . Those poor families! Only a small cemetery but very interesting.

“OUR VISIT TO THE CEMETERY”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2013

Very well maintained cemetery. The grandfather and grandson who tend the graves speak good English which is quite rare now in Sri Lanka. They know every inscription on the gravestones as well as the history of those buried there- a worthwhile visit and experience.
