“A beautiful house”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

The only downside to Jungle Tide is the last part of the journey. Hopefully the road will soon be repaired and this negative removed. Even witha good road Jungle Tide is someway out of Kandy, this can be a positive or negative depending on wether you like the hustle, bustle, noise and crowds of a large town. Getting away from Kandy into the clean air of Jungle Tide was for us great. We had a taxi van take us to Jungle Tide and then take us next day on a tour. The van managed the road okay. Martin then arranged a tuk-tuk for ther next day (to go to the elephant orphanage) and also to take us to the railway station when we left. The tuk-tuk seemed to cope with the road better than the van. The three evening meals we had were excellent and really good value. However the breakfasts could do with a bit more variety and maybe some fresh fruit. We only used the pool one day, but it was clean and a good size. The surrounding area is being landscaped and grass grown.

We spent 2 nights at Jungle Tide last week. A beautiful bungalow with a breath-taking view from the verandah. Jerry & Sally, the owners let us have the whole bungalow to ourselves, as we were a large family of 9 people. The housekeepers Martin and Rani are such a delight - ever helpful and ready to do anything to make the stay as comfortable as possible...and the food cooked by Rani was simply awesome. This is the place were one can relax, breathe fresh air, enjoy great food and come back feeling pampered silly and totally rejuvenated! Hope the last few kms of the road to Jungle Tide gets repaired soon by the local municipality - the bumpy ride is the only sore point leading to this Paradise! Jerry & Sally have created a little piece of heaven and we would love to go back.

Unfortunately the journey to get here really makes it difficult to recommend Jungle Tide. This is a shame because the state of the road is obviously not the fault of the owners. The website does provide a warning but to be frank the road is nearly impassible for the last 4km and particularly stressful if travelling with children. On the night after we arrived the bridge over the river fell in leading to an even more torturous journey. Please be warned if you do decide to travel here.

We were also disappointed by the poor quality of the bathroom, very cheap fittings seem to have been used and the pool, advertised as being open, was green. Clearly the filtration system either hasn't been installed, doesn't work or is never switched on.

While the staff, Rani and Martin, we're friendly enough if truth be told we did not feel that they went out of their way to help, this was in contrast to our experience elsewhere in Sri Lanka. If fact we were uncertain what service to expect given the self catering nature of the guesthouse despite our tour operator organising half board. For example, no desert was provided or even offered which we thought strange.  Rooms were generally clean but the duvet was dirty and never changed.

On the positive side, sitting on the veranda was idyllic and the views fantastic. Rani's food was truly exceptional. However, we did not feel that these positives made up for the problems. Perhaps Jungle Tide is just half finished, it could be fantastic but the owners need to focus on management and maintenance of the property and decide whether they are offering luxury or budget accommodation and that road needs to get fixed!

We were sorry to hear that you were the first person not to have enjoyed their stay at Jungle Tide and we can only apologise unreservedly for this. The concerns you raise about the state of the pool and bathroom fittings are ones we are immediately investigating to rectify via our Project Manager based in Sri Lanka.

As you accept, we make no secret of the fact that the last stretch of the road is a problem. We are continuing to press for it to be repaired, as are other hotels and businesses nearby, but in Sri Lanka these things can take a long time!

We are surprised that you found our staff less than fully helpful. They have received nothing but praise from all our other reviewers and in our guest book! The 'duvet' you refer to is in fact a non-washable decorative cover and not to be used for sleeping under. And we do provide desserts if asked, for a very small additional charge.

Finally, we cannot agree that we need to decide whether we are luxury or budget. We are clear that our market lies between the two, as do our rates.

After travelling for nearly 36 hours by plane, train, and automobile, there is no better place to rest and rejuvenate than Jungle Tide. The location, while a bit of a bumpy ride up a mountain from Kandy, is probably one of the most beautiful spots on Earth. The view from the back porch is lovely - especially when enjoyed with tea (or beer). The rooms are extremely comfortable, clean, and well put together. All your needs are lovingly provided for by Rani and Martin. Rani's cooking is quite possibly the best in the country - at least it was the best we had in our travels there. Martin will gladly help you decide what to do in the area and how to get there. Jungle Tide is the perfect place for a romantic getaway that will make you never want to leave. We sure didn't, and ended up extending our stay by an extra day. Can't wait to come back.

We spent 7 days in Jungle Tide and had a truely lovely time. We could easily have stayed longer. The setting is beautiful, the house is very comfortable with nice rooms and Martin & Rani the housekeepers are just fantastic. The food that Rani made was delicious, we enjoyed each and every meal. Martin was incredibly helpful, especially when we had to find a garage in Kandy when the a/c in our car packed up. The walks in the area are wonderful, our children loved running around in the garden and really enjoyed the walks. We wished we could have made more walks but we also wanted to explore Kandy. The road to Jungle Tide is fine except indeed for the last bit, which is pretty bad. But we didn't find it that hard to negotiate and to be honest the 30-40 min drive out of Kandy isn't bad at all when you see what you get. We really enjoyed swimming in the pool, the setting is lovely. It almost felt like swimming amongst the trees. Jerry and Sally have created a lovely home and we hope to visit Jungle tide again in the future.

We had come to Kandy to see the Elephant Festival and booked quite late so this was one of the last places available. We finished quite late in town and then headed to Jungle Tide after an evening. They did warn us about the distance from Kandy and low quality roads, but it did take a bit longer than expected to get there.

However, we were greeted warmly on arrival and when we woke in the light of morning, we found ourselves in a magical location amongst the tea estates. There is still work going on around the grounds and the potential is very exciting. The rooms were clean and adequate.

The defining feature of this place is the tranquility of its location. It would be great to have a very relaxing few days here - perhaps for artists. As an extra, it is worth popping into the tea museum a couple of kilometres on the way back to Kandy.

Stayed with family for two nights - had booked two rooms in this property. We were looking for a "home stay" and not another "star" hotel.

Jungle Tide is located further inside the tea estates and getting there could be a little daunting. However once you reach, book shelf at the entrance, the living room, the rooms, the curtains and Martin welcome you as if it is your home! We reached very late - around 10pm at Jungle Tide. Even at this hour, Martin was energetic and ready to help us with any food that was available. We ordered for milk and got it served at our rooms. The rooms were clean, tidy and spacious. The entire property was well furnished with a great attention to detail. Never expected "Wi-Fi" to be available in this location!

If the credit of building this beautiful property goes to Sally and Jerry, the credit of making the experience an unforgettable one goes to Martin and Rani. Ever-ready to serve and not wishing to miss even a small opportunity to help you, Martin is a "perfect" example of how to "treat customers". In my opinion, Martin deserves to teach those at "star" hotels how to treat customers and more than that, how to serve customers selflessly! Rani's cooking skills deserve a special mention. "Pol Sambol" - we hogged this item like crazy on both the days we were here, would love to go back just to eat it!! I was fortunate to know Tamil so that I could speak to Martin for few hours into the night and learn about his life. God bless these two people!!

Kudos to Sally and Jerry - I did get to read some of your book and it was great to know about your experience in Sri Lanka and how you built this property! Your meticulous planning, keeping in mind the "traveller", amazes me when I think about it even now!

This is the place to stay if one is in Kandy! I would love to go back to this place and stay a little longer!!
