“Nice cheap place to stay”
Reviewed January 24, 2012

Very close to town, can walk. Can ask for breakfast. Really enjoyed. Cleaned washroom. We couldn't get a hotel the day we were in Kandy. A friend gave the # to the Lake bungalow. Thats the only way to book this place. They don't give locals. The owner is a very nice lady. I loved it. Will recomend to others

Room Tip: Minimum facilities. only 3 rooms

If arriving by bus or rail you'll need a tuk tuk to get there, because lake Bungalow id about 1km from the bus or the railway station. In 2008 that's only a 250 rupee ride, or it was for three of us with baggage after negotiation! Lake Bungalow is well signed from the lakeside road, up a steepish road after the small "in wall cafe".

Reception per se is not obvious, and it's hard to knock on the gate to the main bungalow - another reason to arrive by tuk tuk, because they hear it labour up the short hill from the main road. If you arrive in school hours you'll find you've been helped to your room before you've even noticed! But, if you need help, go towards the tall iron gate to what appears to be the most private of gardens and hail pleasantly!

The rooms are in the 10 year old new block above the school. Each floor can be rented as a whole or room by room, and there is a useful kitchen on the lower floor. Good working fans are in all public areas and in each room. Most rooms are ensuite, most have excellent views. Each bed has a good mosquito net. Each room has hot water and the toilets are western style.

Do close windows when not in your room. Monkeys will enjoy your luggage if you do not!

The prices are at backpackers' hostel levels, but the overall experience is way above that. We paid £4 per room per night (2,000 rupees) and 300 rupees per person for a good breakfast of fruit, tea, toast, and an egg cooked in any way you like. If pre-ordered a Sri Lankan breakfast is available, probably for a different price.

Lake Bungalow has many regular customers. If we return to Kandy we will be one of them. The bungalow is right out of the British Raj era, with the most amazing collection of antiques, proudly displayed in the owner's personal accommodation.

This is a family establishment, run by the family for over 30 years. They have a fierce pride in their establishment. We arrived with no expectations and left feeling almost part of the family. We came on personal recommendation and we're certainly making that ourselves. This was our first Sri Lankan hotel, and it set high expectations both for quality and price.

Laundry is low cost and done efficiently, but be prepared to pack damp clothes - the locality is not wonderful for drying things because of humidity. If leaving in the early morning be aware that the maid arrives at 8am. Leaving before that means you will need to sort out your own pile of laundry.

One minor demerit was soon rectified by the owners. For the first time ever in 30 years the lady of the house had double booked us for one of our second batch of two days. She seemed so upset that we think it to be likely to be correct, too! She arranged alternate accommodation for the one awkward night within easy walking distance. It was never likely to be a patch on Lake Bungalow, but it was perfectly adequate, and we still returned for breakfast on her veranda!

This is an "old school" guest house run by an old school family.

And the elephant tusks? They belonged to a venerable and much loved family elephant who died many years ago.

  • Liked — The old fashioned feel. It took us back in time without sacrificing service or quality
