We had overnight trip to Kandy and stayed at Serene Garden at Buddhist festival time. Our room had black mould growing up walls in bedroom and bathroom. The smell was awful when room had been closed up. Furnishing very sparse, double bed, single bed, two dining chairs and TV. No drawer storage, no hanging space. Three plastic hangers on hook in bathroom. Cupboard space for mini-bar but no fridge. Water for shower barely warm. Balcony minute with view of opposite building. Mattresses stacked on landing. This probably was a room that is not generally used except if every other room booked. Nothing like website. Shame really as other people seem to have fared much better than us.
Would not recommend to anyone.

We spent a couple of days enjoying the splendours of Kandy City.
The Serene Gardens fullfilled our every requirement :-

Location - excellently place to get a true feel of the city but just away from the hustle of what is an colourful and vibrant place to visit

Staff - very helpful without being pushy and never once gave the impression that their friendliness was dependant on a tip.

room - Cean and spacious, excellent views from upper floors, keep an eye out for the monkeys in surounding trees. Adaptor needed for electrics, it has a three pin plug system, but uses rounded pins not uk ones. hotel will provide if you don't have one.

Pool - Small, but pleasant for a cooling dip, time permitting.

Bar - Good choice of drinks, amazing views from outside balcony.

Room Tip: high floors have spectacular views.

Stayed here for two nights on our tour of Sri Lanka. Set up on the hills overlooking Kandy, this was a great place to stay during the Cricket World Cup.
The hotel had a pool (bonus!), and a great restaurant.
Rooms were excellent size with cable TV (could catch up with the news!) great air conditioning and small balcony.
However, be careful of the monkeys that hang around (literally!) on the balcony, roof and if you leave the door open - in your room if there is food. Staff will warn you about this so take heed!
You will need a car to get around, as walking up and down the hills is tough, especially if it is hot.
You can see the Temple of the Tooth from the hotel as well.
kandy was an excellent place to stay.
Great staff, but the food - if you are buying lunch - is expenisive here.

Serene Garden Hotel is a clean hotel that does remind one of a converted apartment residence as mention in the Lonely Planet guide. It's a good place to stay for one or two nights, but you'll begin to fell claustrophobic after much more and it could probably cost less as well. The bathroom was updated, but cramped, and the bed took up most of the space in the room leaving no space for much else. I paid heed to the warning sign on the glass doors leading to the small balcony, so I didn't have any problems with monkeys. The only real annoyance was the lack of housekeeping from one day to the next. I do not know if this was hotel policy or an oversight on the part of the staff. In general, the staff were as friendly and helpful as everyone else I met in Sri Lanka.

This hotel is good for a city hotel with balconey and wifi connection, but you cannot leave your balcony doors open as the monkey will come into your room. They were sweet but you wouldn't want one as a pet. Disappointed as all the food was western and not much choice for sri lankan food and it was cold the first night but our guide Upul of sri lankan tailored tours sorted this out and the 2nd night was exceptional. The wine was great value for money compared to the othrt hotels but there was not much choice. The showers were really good and the bar area was a lovely place to sit for a couple of gins after deinner.

Room Tip: get your laundry done here as it was perfect
