“A TOUCH OF CLASS”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

My wife and I stayed there by accident on a 3 night/4 day tour of Sri Lanka our listed hotel being unavailable.

If this was the reason that lead us there we both hope for much more of the same in the future.

The road to it is indeed a bit hairy but our driver knew the way and all was well when we arrived.

We certainly endorse everthing good that has been said about the rooms, view meals and staff.

If we are ever fortunate enough to return to Kandy we will certainly try and arrange a stay at this hotel.

A richly deserved "well done" to all concerned.

Room Tip: Splendid views from rooms on the left hand side of the building.

Don't be put off by the crazy road you have to go up in order to reach this hotel. We were getting more and more concerned that we had booked a shack to stay in! However when you arrive, you have a stunning panorama view over kandy, the staff are friendly and THE ROOMS ARE FANTASTIC. by far the poshest rooms and bathrooms we came across, beating some 5 star hotels in their plushness and size.

Superb sleep had here, cheap laundry rates and the only bad things to say are that the outside of the hotel didnt match the looks of the inside and the bathroom has a glass wall adjoining the bedroom area with a blind on it, which means you can see your partner, or in my case sister in the shower or on the toilet!!!!! However within a few minutes of bringing this to the attention of the hotel, we had a sheet covering put up and all was well again!

We ended up comparing the rooms of every hotel to this one - it really is great.

Room Tip: All rooms equal

The Tourmaline Hotel is a beautiful hotel located at the top of the hill of Kandy. From any room you will for sure have a top sight. The rooms are big and clean and we also received a complimentary gasket of fresh fruit (and fresh fruit of Sri Lanka is something really gorgeous).
The only negative aspect was the behaviour of the staff of the restaurant. Our reservation included the breakfast but when we were done with it, the staff brought us the bill explaining that our reservation included a continental breakfast while we had a full breakfast. I think that they should have asked us before serving the full breakfast if we would like an upgrade.
Some problems also for paying with credit card but the reception staff was very helpful.

During our stay in Sri Lanka we stayed at a range of hotels with varying prices and expectations. Unfortunately the Tourmaline did not live up to the standards we had set. Don't get me wrong, the rooms were very nice. However the main thing that let this establishment down was the appalling food. For the price that we paid, I would have expected some of the nicest food in this wonderful island nation. This was not the case. Soggy calamari and a mediocre sandwich were not what we were hoping for. When staying at the Tourmaline try to experience the food in town.
The staff were very friendly...

Very much enjoyed our short stay here. The rooms were clean and comfortable with fantastic views. The service was also great with a lovely fruit gift basket given on arrival. The food was also very enjoyable. Would definitely recommend!

We've just returned from a trip to SL and as part of our tour we stayed at the TOurmaline Hotel for one night. Our guide had told us it wasn't very nice so we were pleasantly surprised - it must have been rennovated as the rooms were very luxurious for SL, very well equipped. We had fruit on arrival and chocolates in our room.

Buffett breakfast and dinner were ok. Great views from the room

Nice hotel with the most amazing views over Kandy. Our room was beautiful and comfortable. Unfortunately the pool wasn't open so nothing to do - we just watched tv in our room.

The restaurant is fairly formal - with dresscode of no shorts/tshirts etc. Food was quite a la carte but fine.

We had a lovely room boy who gave us a lovely heart shaped cake saying congratulations on. The cake was delicious.
