“Nice holidays”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013

This was our first trip to Sri Lanka. We especially took this hotel because of the calm location;
it is not the ideal place to go with kids.
Hotel is very nice and beatiful refurbished.
We had a warm welcome with a nice moctail. The only thing missing is a welcome brochure with restaurant opening hours and an overview of the possible activities. We had to find out ourselves.
The staff at this hotel is very friendly, helpful and polite, always with a smile on their face and ready to please.
We took a superiour room with lagoon vieuw. Room was very clean, bit small for a superior but nice. The housekeeping starts quit early so hang a "do not disturb" sign to your door.
Food was good, there was a big variety for every meal. We missed a bit the choice on fish.
Beach is clean, but see is a bit too rough to swim, but as there is a nice swimming pool that is never overcrowded, it is not an issue; If you go to the beacht, the beach boys will try to sell you excursions, but if you say you're not interessted they will leave you alone.

All by all a good hotel price/quality

Stuck out on a peninsula, about 20km north of Bentota beach, this rather large hotel/complex is tastefully decorated and provides enough to make your stay memorable.

The hotel sports a modern design and a welcoming staff all within picturesque setting. The grounds are nice, there are various tables/chairs with views of the bay or sea which mean you can sit in different places and feel like you've changed location. The indoor and poolside bar are both tasteful in decor and design. The hotel is on the beach but the sea is rather dangerous, so I would recommend swimming.

At busy times there doesn't seem to be enough chairs by the pool. The food in the restaurant was really good. Please can I recommend the Marlin and the Red Snapper, both very nice.

One big downside is the location, you are rather isolated. However this may appeal.

All in all I thought the staff were very helpful and friendly, I liked the bar and restaurant and the grounds were relaxing and picturesque. I'd stay here again.

We stayed at this hotel February 2013 for 8 nights. The hotel itself was clean and had good facilities. The bathroom was nice, the rain shower was great, and our bed was big, comfy and clean. The pool was also nice. However, the customer service was non-existent. For example:

- every morning we were sat at a table that was dirty and not made up with cutlery. We had to ask, every morning, for them to give us cutlery and cups, and then it took them ages, like 10 minutes. I complained about this on the third day to the duty manager (a chef!?) and said that the staff did not seem to have any basic training. He apologised, and then agreed with me, saying that they did not in fact have any basic training! Nothing changed.

- There was fresh 'mixed fruit juice' at breakfast, but everything else (e.g. orange juice) was just cordial. I asked for a glass of fresh juice and was told no, unless I wanted to pay extra for it. I thought this was a real cheek, given how much we'd already paid to stay at the hotel. I told the waiter that I wasn't happy about this at all, and he ignored me and walked off. He didn't even ask a manager to come and talk to me, he just wasn't bothered. There was a general unwillingness to take responsibility or be helpful among all the staff.

- The food was really poor quality. We paid £60 for lobster for the two of us one evening, and it was pretty disgusting and tough. We complained; nothing was done.

- The staff seemed to be uber-keen to be tipped, even though they weren't very helpful. When we first arrived, after about 20 hours travelling, and at which point I was feeling quite ill, the porter who carried our suitcases to the room stodd there with his hand out for a tip, and didn't leave until my boyfriend had rooted around in our luggage to find our money to give him something!

- I asked the hotel reception if they could arrange a taxi to take us to a town (Galle) the following day so we could have a look around. The answer was no. The receptionist suggested I go to the street outside the hotel and find my own (which I did). There was no concierge service at all.

- Despite Sri Lanka's reputation for tea and coffee, we could only get instant coffee and nasty tasting tea bags (of one variety only) at the hotel. This was really disappointing.

- There was no managerial presence at the hotel, no one seemed to be in control. At breakfast, things would run out (such as the plate of bananas), and no one would have the presence of mind to replace them, until I specifically instructed them, and then it would take about 10 minutes.

We got more and more annoyed as the holiday progressed, because even after complaining, there was just no improvement. At other hotels (such as the Amangalla and Jetwing Lighthouse) the level of service was much better, and even if the waiters were not great, there would be a manager with experience keeping an eye on them. There was really no one at the Avani who was taking any charge.

I would not recommend this hotel.

Like most I check Trip Ad. before booking anywhere but always dismiss the 'I was charged for a packet of peanuts so the hotel is not good' and take the average into account. Over the years we have been to many places, never any place twice and before I retired I was (sadly) in the top 2% worldide of Holiday Inn users.
This hotel ticked every box we had. Clean, good food with ample choice, wonderful staff who cannot do enough for you and are just so polite and it's not too noisy. There is even a guy who paints / touches up most mornings in the public area's. We spent 21 days there all inclusive and will be going back. The downside is the 3 hour journey from Columbo but a new road promises the journey will only take 1 hour. The sea is not a place for the fient hearted but why bother when the pool area is so good and there are always other beaches. The only beach i have seen thich had zero flotsom was in the Maldives. Here there is the odd bottle to and bottle but it is not a dirty beach. The beach guys are not an issue, they are trying to make a living but ignore them and all is OK. We were stopped once, but I will talk to anyone and saying no and walking on is simple. However we did use Jambo and his Tuk Tuk for a monring out and about he wanted R1000 (about £5) we gave him R1200. A huge thanks to the hotel, especially all the staff and the wonderful people we met especially Alan & Caroline (I'm not hot anymore!). We didn't use the spa so couldn't score it.

Room Tip: E-mail the hotel prior to arriving and give them the type of room you would prefer if available. (Cl...

The hotel infrastructure is very nice and the staff were very helpful. We were originally given a room right next to the reception (from what i understood the room number are smaller the closer we are to the lobby), but complained about the noise as it was past 23h and we could not sleep after a long flight.
We were then given a room on the far side of the hotel, which was very quite.
The food in the hotel was ok, so was breakfast.
Regarding the beach.... not really of much use due to small size, very dusty sand, big waves and full of touts trying to sell you something, so hung out at the pool.
The lagoon in the back looks good but except for the water sport is of no use as you can't swim or sunbathe in it.
On the second day we took a train to Bentota (where the is another Avani hotel) and it was the best decision we made. Nice beach, and lots of food options.

Room Tip: If you want quite, stay away from the lobby area (small number rooms, ex: 201, are closer to recepti...

We arrived at the Avani resort on the 29/1/2013 and were greeted by smartly dressed staff and ushered from our car into the reception foyer were we were given the nicest fresh mocktails Ive ever tasted. We stayed all inclusive..... I wouldnt stay there otherwise as food is expensive and drinks too.
We were issued a room on the second floor but as I was on crutches due to a broken leg that room would not be any good as there is no lift. But they quickly rectified this and gave us another room on the ground floor. The room was very clean and was stocked with all the essentials you could need ie tea coffee beer and soft drinks in the fridge.
Food was brilliant and the second floor Mangrove restraunt was a mission on the crutches but if you wanted the staff can serve you food in the downstairs restaurant. The food for breakfast lunch and dinner is a self service buffet style with loads of choice of most cuisines. However there is a lunch time bar menu consisting of mainly western choices ie burger and fries etc, the portions of fries are massive and very nice too. Drinks choices are good too.
The area in which the hotel resides is very nice and quiet, the only gripe we had was that the beach men who stand at the fence waving at you in the resort bug you a bit but if you ignore them they soon get the picture, to be fair they are all business owners and want you to spend money at their places.
The chipmunks are cute, they hang around the resort and will take food from your hand when you offer them, but they never take food from your plate or get too close. Visit the ceylon spa! its perfect, we had a few treatments;).
Tuk tuks are on hand at any time but always agree a price before you get in.
The driving there is much like India, completely nuts but after a while you get used to it.
There is lots of excursions to do but be careful who you go with as some are very expensive. We went on a couple with Aitkin and Spence tours, they were very good and well worth the money. Diethelm who also run tours were very pricey..... avoid.
All in all Srilanka is a wonderful hive of fast paced life mixed the polar opposites of complete horizontal relaxation, obviously dont expect a modern metropolis the country is still recovering from years of civil war, but to be honest if you came here not know about what happend there you wouldnt know any different.

My husband and I stayed at the Avani for 10 nights at the end of our tour of Sri Lanka.
Everything about the hotel is superb.
Food was very good, plenty of variety and choices to suit everyone
Rooms were large spacious and clean with views over the river or sea
Service was excellent at all times.
The hotel is spotlessly clean in all areas with a beautiful swimming pool
Spa was very reasonable and very good.
The staff at this hotel were very good, very friendly, helpful and polite, always with a smile on their face and ready to please.
Special thanks to Rankangna who made beautiful towel arrangements on our bed every evening, but all the room boys are very good
Look out for Nelson and Villy on the beach as they will arrange excellent trips.
We will definitely be returning to this fantastic hotel with scenic views, amazing sunsets and fabulous staff.
