Recently returned from 10 days at the Mermaid and we had a great time.
Paid a bit extra for the superior room overlooking the beach and sea and was well worth it.
Yes occasionally things failed, our safe did but they are quick to put things right.
Staff cannot do enough for you and the food was pretty good, decent selection of curries everyday but other options available.
Had no issues with cold food warming up due to the openness of the restaurant and no aircon as mentioned by another reviewer?
The staff are quick to clear your plates but this is just their way.
Only fault I could find was the pool which turned green for a couple of days before being cleaned properly - not a problem though as there is a second pool at the front usually used for sports.
Entertainment was a mixed bag but the fact they had any was a plus as the hotel was only a third full when we were there.
Location is fab but as we like a walk in the evening we were disappointed that you can't really walk to any bars along the beach and it is pitch black out the front. Neighbouring businesses appeared to be closed anyway.
Most of the independent tour boys are reliable - if you want a great Tuk Tuk driver use Chandana who is out the front of the hotel - lovely chap who took us to meet his family and bought out some local delicacies and a delicious pot of ginger tea!
All in all it is a great place with wonderful staff but remember, it is a 3 star hotel at a good price - don't expect a 5 star experience for what you pay and then complain.

Room tip: Superior sea room worth the bit extra

As we entered through the gates we felt the natural warmth of the staff gushing towards us along with the breeze from the ocean, immediately unwinding us and making us at ease.

The long stretch of beach not far from the city made Hotel Mermaid & Club an ideal getaway. A stroll along the beach to a perfect sunset ending with a star-studded sky soothed our soul. Dining was made pleasanter with a superb violinist and guitarist duo in the background, and the evening came to a close with a daring fire limbo performance by a village family.

For those who seek relaxation and elegant cuisine without extravagance along with staff who go out of their way, Hotel Mermaid & Club offers a space, as it did to us.

Within minutes of arriving in our room we found that the shower screen door didn't close properly and the in-room safe didn't work at all. We called down to reception and staff very quickly attended. The safe was replaced but nothing could be done to fix the shower door until the next day. We were offered a couple of alternative rooms on the ground floor but declined as we preferred the room on the top floor and the shower could be fixed the next day anyway. After breakfast the next day, the housekeeper told us he'd turned another room around on the top floor so that we could move. Again we declined as we'd unpacked and, after being on tour living out of a suitcase for a week, we didn't want the hassle of packing up and moving again - the gap in the shower didn't let much water out anyway. Had we been advised of this the day before, we wouldn't have unpacked.

Housekeeping popped by every evening to refill and switch on the mosquito plug. The timing wasn't great as we were always in the bathroom or dressing for dinner! Why can't the housekeeper replace the tablet in the day and leave the guest to switch the plug on in the evening? That's how it worked in the other 4 hotels we stayed in in Sri Lanka.

The hotel has lovely grounds and loads of sun loungers to choose from. Towels were provided for the loungers and it was nice that you got 2 so that you could cover the entire mattress. I don't believe the hotel was fully occupied though so this may not always be the case.

The pool/beach bar was often left unattended for 15-20 minutes. When staff were there they seemed to stand around a lot, perhaps they could stroll around asking guests if they'd like drinks? Drinking water wasn't available from this bar.

The two other bars were characterless, the one with the pool table wasn't even obvious and no-one used it. It had one beer tap, and a few bar stools, it was very drab. The main bar only had a few cushioned seats under ceiling fans. The remaining seats were made of wood so got quite uncomfortable after a while, they were away from any fans too. There were some webbed seats nearer the pool but they were used by people in their swimwear in the day so were probably greasy with sun lotion. Again the bar area lacked character and was more like an extension of the hotel lobby.

Most drinks were watered down/topped up with soda. We were drinking rum and pineapple and it was always topped off with soda water. Whilst we didn't mind this, it was actually nice and refreshing, perhaps some people might not like it.

The restaurant was open all round so no A/C. Consequently chilled food warmed up very quickly and the desserts suffered especially. Small jellies, mousses, chocolatey treats all melted. Likewise, meat and fish salads sat festering for up to a couple of hours. As with most places we ate in Sri Lanka we found the local food too spicy for our liking. Sadly the international hot food items were also plied with black pepper and were spoilt a bit. Service was too quick, staff seemed to hover to clear your plates as you ate your last mouthful of food. Given that the hotel only has one restaurant and you eat all your main meals in it, there wasn't enough variety. Perhaps themed evenings would work better?

I booked for a massage one day, luckily the only day it rained. It was a lovely experience but marred slightly when part way through my session volleyball commenced in the pool outside the spa building. Gone was the nice relaxing music to be replaced by the frolicking in the pool!!!

Overall the hotel served it's purpose and we had a nice rest. We were given a lovely send off on the last evening in the restaurant, the treat we were presented with was a nice gesture. Maybe I'm just particularly picky and these are niggles rather than complaints. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to my family and friends.

We have just returned from 10 days at The Mermaid Hotel - one of our best holidays ever. The hotel suited us perfectly - beautiful setting, well run , spacious, comfortable and so very welcoming. All of the staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough for us , but a special mention to Rayan on reception who is a remarkable young man and we're sure he will go far. Everyone's language skills were very impressive. The men who looked after our room (308) were superb , we had fresh flowers on the bed every day and generally they looked after us really well. The hotel restaurant offered truly delicious food , including things for the Western palette , but I must say we absolutely loved the Sri Lankan food. The jewellers at the hotel is well worth a visit. We cannot wait to go back as 10 days was really too short. So much to see , so much to do.

Room tip: Quieter room overlook the Ocean.
