I've been to Sri Lanka many a time, as my parents were born there, I stayed at mermaid and can honestly say was the best hotel and holiday I have had.
The staff are brilliant, everyone courteous, polite , helpful and always a smile,
The food is to die for, being used to Sri Lankan cooking, ... But have no flair for cooking it, I must admit I pigged out, the choice of food varied every day, and my son who is a typical burger and chips boy was catered for by chef,
The staff always willing to help,
The locals on beach are friendly and don't pester you,
Made some good contacts due to my dad speaking the lingo , so we didn't get conned, but on whole if you stick to your plan and aren't persuaded my guides to do other tours you,ll be ok
There are plenty of places to tour ,.... Some which you may have to stay overnight as journey too long, but if you can please visit Grace Orphanage .... I visit every time and donate clothes and toys to the children men and women there, you don't have to go in, if you don't want to , they just grateful for donations and if you do visit you will be warmly welcomed
There is a jewellers right outside hotel, moon light , they are good, reliable and my dad should know as he always buying jewerlly . Also if you need a driver can recommend P Chandigarh
Chandusrilanka@yahoo.com. He will take you anywhere you want and can recommend places to visit.

The only down side I can say, if you don't like foreign food, heat , expect every person to speak good English.... Then don't visit , stay at home!!!!!

Room tip: If you go out of season would recommend ground room, easy access to pool area

The staff are the friendliest and most helpful I have ever encountered. The food pleases both western and local palettes. The grounds are beautiful & the refurb has been completed to a high standard. The deluxe room we stayed in was perfectly adequate for 3 people with rain shower and huge bathtub. I cannot fault this hotel, nor can I praise it enough.

Happy to be on holiday at the Mermaid Hotel at this moment in time.
Myself and my wife are here for a two week vacation. We are presently five days into our holiday and we could not wish to be anywhere nicer. We, like many of you work all year to pay for our time away. When the time comes for our vacation we expect good levels of service, hospitality and courtesy. So without adding any spin, this is the minimum you should expect at this hotel. But you will be pleased to know that you get a whole lot more.
We would without question recommend this hotel to anyone, knowing that you are going to fully enjoy yourselves.

Room tip: The rooms that have sea views give a good advantage.

The hotel is amazing. For people who know and like sri lanka it is exactly what you would expect from a hotel marketed by the likes of british airways...the rooms are modern and confortable. The food is lovely and changes daily with lots of variety for everyone...spa treatments are relaxing and well priced. The only other thing i would want is gin...but if i asked for this im sure the friendly staff would bend over backwards to sort this out. Would deffo come again...without question 10/10
