A lovely hotel with great food, friendly staff and relaxing atmosphere. We spent our wedding anniversary here and the hotel produced a lovely cake for my wife's birthday; very relaxing as it is a long walk to town so quite isolated; take a tuk tuk from outside; we met some lovely guests and staff and had a great time! Our bed was decorated with flowers each day and we had a lovely balcony on the top floor; there is a railway line outside but we did not find the noise intrusive; free wifi in the reading room or pay 350 rupees to use the hotel computer. If you go outside the all inclusive they add up to 25% for taxes and service.

Room Tip: We were in 307 between the main pool and the beach.

This hotel was brilliant, I had my reservations when I arrived there ,but at the end of the holiday I cried cause I did'nt want to leave .

It's emmaculately clean and the food was amazing. The Staff are brilliant, nothing is too much. A special thanks to Meneka the who made our holiday so special. I never go back anywhere but this is the 1st place I would.

Tours- Went to the meeting and they wanted £175 for the Kandy tour plus elephants. Go to SURESH on the beach , can't miss him his got a RED MOHICAN. Got the same trip at a fraction of the cost, and he looked after us. He actually made our holiday. His business is our happiness and will taylor make your holiday to suit your needs. There's no hard selling with him either. I really liked Suresh.( and trust me I gave him a hard time, acting like a diva )Email me if you have any questions, or him on :- suresh-pushpakumara@yahoo.com. He done all our tours. He managed to pull strings that got us VIP treatment. But word of warning there are touts on the beach who say they work for him , they don't . Ask the barman to point Suresh out if concedrned.

Wine - The hotel don't offer this as an AI . I was aware of this and it wasn't a problem, not many hotels in Sri Lanka do. but they do sell it . My tipple was Prosecco £20 a bottle in the hotel. I paid Surresh 400 Rupees (£1.70) to drive me into town and picked up 5 bottles at £6.50 each at the food market. Initially I was very blatant, taking my bottles to dinner with me, until I was told there was a corkage charge which I was unaware of. Be cute about it .

Thank you to everyone at the Mermaid for making my stay so special. Might see you again soon.

Room Tip: The deluxe room is so not worth the extra £30 per night. Save yourself some money .

We were very surprised at the standard of the Mermaid Hotel where myself and 10 family members had gone for my daughter's wedding. Initially we all thought the Hotel was possibly out of a 'Saga' catelogue as the clientale seemed mostly retired, older people. Apart from the cultural shows the evening entertainment was geared to the older person - you really have to like Frank Sinatra etc and quite honestly the Hotel could have had at least one evening (perhaps in the sports area) for a DJ and up to date music. Having said that, the staff was wonderful, genuinely eager to make your holiday the best. The rooms are very nice, comfortable with TV, CD player etc and very clean. The flowers on the turned down bed each night was a lovely touch. Food could have done with being Sri Lankan rather than catering to the english palette - there was only one fish choice per meal which was disappointing and wine not included. Kalutara is not really in the tourist zone, so to go anywhere you need to take the bus (which is excellent and super cheap) or a tuk tuk. Obviously tours are arranged. Highly recommended if you want a quiet, lazy, lovely holiday walking on the beach and just taking in the experience of Sri Lanka. The wedding was fabulous, but most of the arrangements were done on arrival and would NOT recommend arranging things through an English travel agent (we had gone with Tropical Sky - not recommended) but better to deal with the hotel directly.

Room Tip: Would recommend the rooms above ground level - the ground level rooms open directly onto the pool or...

Lovely relaxing hotel. Staff excellent. Room always kept clean with fresh flowers on bed every day. Take mosi repellant you will need it! Very good food if you like spicey food. The only problem was on Valentine evening it was spoilt by english residents behaving inappropriately for the occasion. Hope to go again.

My wife and I returned to the Mermaid this January into early February for three weeks. The weather was very kind with two slightly cloudy days initially, there was light rain on the second Wenesday during lunch.
Temperatures of 32C in the shade are typical during the day and 26C at night. Be advised to take plenty of suncream and don't forget mosquito repellant as there are a few about during the day with more at night.
The flight from Heathrow to Columbo was by Sri Lankan Airlines, We were looked after on both the outbound and inbound flights very well considering both flghts were full. Dont forget to go on line as soon as you receive your flight booking reference in order to reserve your seats. After the long car journey down to Kalutara we were given a wonderful welcome in the hotel. Expect at least 21/2 hours journey until the new motorway is completed when it should reduce to 3/4 hour, This was rumoured to be later in 2013 as was completion of the southern airport, however watch this space.
Our cases were taken to our requested room after we had relaxed and enjoyed a welcome cocktail. As stated previously by other contributers the food throughout our stay was absolutely fabulous. The staff in all departments were cheerful and attentive and our room was kept spotlessly clean throughout our stay. Our thanks go to all of you guys.
Transport into Soth Kalutara can be by taxi, tuc-tuc or the local bus in decreasing level of cost. A tuc-tuc cost typically 600 rupee return(£3) for two, whilst an adventure on the local bus cost 12 rupee per person each way. Shoes in particular are inexpensive as are leather goods. There is also a large street market in North Kalutara, ask for directions at the Hotel reception.
The train journey from Kalutara to Galle cost 70 rupee third class and 120 rupee second class. The only difference we could see was that seating was 2 by 2 in 2nd class and 3 by 2 in 3rd, both had working fans and were airconditioned thanks to all windows being open. Tip, on the way down.watch out for touts at the station trying to latch onto your party and on the return journey from Galle make your way well up the platform in order to gain rapid access to your class of carriage, as they fill up within seconds .
The beach boys work hard to provide good quality tours, their reputation is extremely important to them and so are always trustworthy. The multi coloured sandy beach was kept clean throughout our stay but be aware that the sea contains such things as sting rays, one guest was caught out and had to go to the private hospital in Kalutara to have the antidote injected, so wear beach shoes in the sea.
We re-met several guests from our previous stay and finally we too will return again.

Just returned from a weeks stay at the Mermaid.Very friendly staff, excellent service and comfortable rooms. Food good, the a la carte is reasonably priced if you fancy a change from the buffet we enjoyed the sea food platter and beer battered fish and chips. Wine is not part of the all inclusive package so if this is your tipple expect to pay around 3300 rupees including tax and vat. To buy outside from a wine shop(in Kalutara) about 1700 rupees.
We used Suresh with the red stripe in his hair ,one of the beach boys for our trips he was very reliable and would not hesitate to use him again if we returned to Sri Lanka. We did a trip to the Elephant Orphanage then on to Kandy for the Spice gardens, tea plantation, Tooth Temple and cultural show. The hotel we stayed in for the night there was very good. The other trip we made we Suresh was by Tuk Tuk to the Turtle Hatchery one evening. His trips were very good value and we could do things at our pace, we even got him to stop at the wine shop on the way back to our hotel on both trips.
The beach is long and narrow, safe to walk along. However, the sea is quite rough and the current very strong.
Never had a problem getting a sun bed, even though people "reserve" them leaving a towel on them.
Evening entertainment ok.
Snack room was a good idea you could make your own tea, coffee all day.Cakes ,biscuits sandwiches and fruit available mid morning and afternoon.

Didn't think much of our rep Tissan,we were out when he called(3 days after we arrived) so he left a note to call him. When we did he asked" what do you want?" He seemed to think that we should know the days he was visiting the hotel without being told!

Be warned the journey from the airport took us just over 2 hours, the traffic is terrible.

In all a very good trip and I would stay at the Mermaid if I returned to Sri Lanka

We have recently returned from the Mermaid which we chose, based on Tripadvisor recommendations, we were not disappointed, the hotel is clean and comfortable, the food is amazing, buffet style, but always fresh and plentiful and lots of choice. What made the Mermaid special for us, was the attention and friendliness of the staff who cannot do enough for you, also as the hotel is relatively small you quickly make new friends,(Thanks everyone :) evening entertainment is based around the bar area, with local dancers, and musicians. A minor negative is the location which is away from Kalutara, although tuk tuk's are always available and cheap. Sri Lanka is a wonderful island and we did a 3 day trip (elephant orphanage,Kandy,Yala etc) organised by Suresh, who again we discovered through T A, and made our tour unforgettable, we used him for money exchange and also arranged a boat trip at Bentota and beach party, very honest and trustworthy. It is worth going whale watching at Mirissa, although from the Mermaid it is a very early start and 2 to 3 hour journey. Overall a very memorable holiday.
