We had a very good time of early 2 weeks and everything we experienced while our holidays at Mermaid Hotel was very good.. The service is excellent and all the people working there are friendly and courteous all the time. Our room was cleaned every day and we had beautiful daily flower arrangements on our bed. The animation is also multisided but they never were invasive. We had a great time and we would do this sort of holiday everytime again. Also to be mentioned is the food which was excellent too. Nearly no repetition in the weeks of holiday, multivarious every day. It is a good 3* hotel which meets all the requirements and you have there everything you need.

Stayed at Hotel Mermaid and Club for 2 weeks at the start of November.

Food, rooms, facilities and staff were all excellent. Staff particularly were extremely helpful, kind and friendly. Chamal, Sam, Chatanda and Inoka were always helpful and provided great service. Despite being all inclusive, and being slightly sceptical about the food, I had nothing to worry about - there was loads of choice, and it was really delicious!

The hotel is perfectly beach located but it really is a bit tricky to get anywhere else - the heat and state of the road make tuk tuks essential. Saying that, tuk tuks are great fun and really cheap to use!

We met a number of beach boys and took a few trips with Suresh, Amila and Nandi of Suresh Tours to Kandy, Galle Fort and Kalutara. Their trips are great fun - well organised with lots of interesting stops and informative tour guides. The beach boys are friendly, helpful, chatty and well informed, and the trips are excellent value - other than tipping and food, we didn't pay for a thing other than the fee for the tour. They will cater to your every need and will help get the best possible price for any of your shopping.

Room tip: Rooms facing the sea make for great sunsets.

We were very happy with this hotel - the food was very very good with a good variety and always beautifully prepared and presented, also the staff throughout the hotel were of a very high standard. I have to say a special thank you to the animators (water sports) Shivantha and Chaminda who were such fun and so enthusiastic they brightened every day, also Chamal the pool attendant who was always very attentive and friendly - thanks also to the young gardener Nadeera who has probably been promoted by now if the management are doing their job properly !

Final destination after a Virgin Holidays tour of Sri Lanka (which was very good!). The Mermaid is what it says it is. A 3* all inclusive hotel. Wine is not included in the price which is clearly stated in the travel brochure. However, the waiters do their very best to encourage you to buy it and, like all wine in Sri Lanka, its not cheap. The waiters and waitresses are extremely friendly and helpful.
We stayed for two nights over New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in 2011/12. The New Year's Eve buffet was excellent and the firework display was great. However, the Mermaid beauty pagent was appalling and degrading to those who took part. Nine or so poor girls were (mostly) hassled into competing in an event which was very drawn out and quite embarrasing. They had to parade in front of a panel of 'judges', answer some questions about why they had come to Sri Lanka, what they thought of the hotel and what their hobbies were, then dance with each other for quite a long time. Obviously, those that answered later had the advantage of hearing everyone else's answers and it became a creepy-crawly process as people waxed lyrically about the hotel. The guys sitting around us were oggling these girls and making some very inappropriate comments. The whole thing was embarrasing and not at all PC in the 21st century.

The food and the all inclusive drinks were good and the room was fine. We were on the top floor and could see the sea through the palm trees. The trains are noisy but didn't keep us awake.
Not a great deal to do if you like wandering out to the shops. You have to walk about a mile or so along the road back down towards the Tangerine hotel (or you coud take a 200 rupee tuk tuk ride) where there is a parade of gift shops selling batiks, tea, spices and carvings, together with a small number of small restaurants.
The hotel does not have wifi but you can use the very slow internet connection in the office for 300 rupees for half an hour (or go to the small 'internet cafe' just down the road for 120 rupees for 15 minutes - equally slow connection) or hire one of the two 'dongles' from the hotel for 1000 rupees for 12 hours.
Our flight didn't leave till 4.30am and we weren't picked up from the hotel till 11pm. For $40 we were able to keep our room till 9pm, as the 'all inclusive' ended at midday. We ate off the 'al a carte menu' for our dinner and had fish & chips / chicken & chips each for about 700 rupees. Good value.
Overall, it was a good hotel to relax at the end of a tough trip round the island.

Room tip: Top floor rooms have good views but the ground floor rooms have balconies which are accessible to the pool and bar.

We stayed for a few days over New Year. It's very easy to look at many of the comments on the hotel and expect it too be first class. It is however a 3 star hotel and as such it is very good. It is however a long way from being great as so much of the hotel is only above average.

I agree the part which is the best is the staff - however by obviously following direction from hotel management to sell wine for the New Year meal in the end even the staff became a problem - we were asked around 30 times if we wanted to order wine for that evening - each time we went to the bar and 2 or 3 times each meal time.

The hotel is clean and tidy and the room staff do a good job. The rooms however are very basic and the beds not particularly comfortable.

The pool area is very nice and allows for a good relaxing holiday. Getting a lounger was never a problem and with the umbrellas and shade provided by the palm trees it was very comfortable.

The food was good and varied but once again you need to realise this is 3 star food - not great - although the new years eve buffet was excellent.

As people have mentioned the entertainment is either poor or non existent and is the only hotel I've stayed in in recent years without wifi.

Overall we did have a good holiday - the weather was great and we managed to relax. The hotel isn't really good enough for me to consider coming back but to be fair is does deliver on its star rating.

We refer to the reviewer’s comments titled “A very good 3 star hotel……….” and thank the
reviewer for making good comments about the hotel.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused to the reviewer by repeatedly offering wine.

We agree that the mattresses need immediate replacement. In fact, the shipment of the mattresses was due at the beginning of December but was delayed. The ship is now due in
Colombo on the 07th of January 2012. However, we disagree with the reviewer’s comments that the room was very basic. In all our rooms we provide mini bars, TV with 10 channels, electronic safe deposit boxes, CD players, hair dryers, valet service, tea & coffee making
facilities. In addition, all the furniture is in exotic teak and the soft furnishings are in hand
made fabric custom made to our own designs.

Thank you.
