Very impressive hotel, sri lankan 5 star, probably english 4*.
The staff and hotel were excellent, cannot fault it. You just have to realise that life goes at a slower pace than in UK. The foos was excellent, if it's not there ask for it and it will magically appear.
Travelled with Mercury Direct, the rep was a waste of time, info he provided was poor to say the least.
We arranged a couple of trips, did Yala national park, amazing, and boat trip was great, the drivers gave us more info in10 mins than the mercury direct rep did all holiday.
The poll bar and pool boys were excellent nothing too much trouble.
The food ??? well I put on 1/2 stone in 2 weeks, enough said..
All inclusive is well worth it, hotel provided packed breakfast and lunch FOC for trips, ( Yala was 5.30 pick up)
The drinks were Ok and the better half loved the gin fizz, just watch out they don't give you double shots instead of singles, she had a few wobbly sessions.
The evening entertainment wasn't earth shattering, but we all had a laugh at Sri Lankan country and western singers, snake charmers etc.
Just go there chill out, do a few trips, and enjoy.
My better half had two sessions in Spa, very reasonable and thought it was great , also enjoyed the Yoga
Rooms were great as well, super air con

My husband and I stayed at the Royal Palms for Christmas and we had such a lovely week. The drive from the airport was long but an experience and there so much so see, it got a bit hairy at times so might be best to close your eyes.
The hotel is looking a little tired in areas, however the main reception area is beautiful. Our bedroom was big and the bed was massive like 2 doubles beds we also overlooked the pool and beach.
The food is out of this world, so much choice and something for everyone, be prepared to pile on the pounds!! On Christmas eve they put on a gala dinner and the staff really put themselves out, we didn’t think the food could get any better, they has snowmen made out of bread, ice sculptures it looked fabulous.
The only downside to the hotel is there is nothing much in the area for the evenings, you can’t have your dinner then go out for a walk for a drink, you are basically resigned to staying in the hotel. They do put entertainment on but don’t rely on this to keep you entertained as some nights there is nothing on.
The trips are very good but a very long day, we got picked up at 5am and then didn’t get back to the hotel till 8pm. Lucky tours on the beach will take you to some really good places, we went to a turtle orphanage. Beware of the herbal gardens, they are an experience, my husband ended up having hair removal cream on his leg to show us it actually worked and when we spoke to people around the hotel most men had a bald patch in there leg! It was a very funny experience, a must for anyone, however don’t be fouled, we got told most of the stuff didn’t work!!
Would defiantly recommend at the Royal Palms to anyone who is looking for a relaxing holiday and happy to stay in the hotel, we would defiantly return.

I have just returned from the Royal Palms. This was my third holiday in the hotel within 18 months. Each time I stay the hotel just gets better. The staff are all very professional, experienced and caring. The hotel is managed and run to a very high standard. The hotel has been opened nearly 15 years and I understand that refurbishments are in hand so it could be even better. At the moment the bedrooms are extremely well furnished. The food is very varied anmd every evening there is a theme night with freshly cooked food to your taste.
I am a widow but meet up with friends at the hotel. The staff always make me so welcome and when I return I feel that I am coming home to my Sri Lankan family!!! Well one on a very well run hotel

Just got back from 10 day holiday with Mercury Direct.
Hotel is great value for money.
The food is fantastic with lots of choice, We particularly enjoyed the food cooked outside on hot plates in the evening, especially the Sri Lankan night.
Service for drinks at dinner was a little slow at times.
Lovely bar staff in upstairs bar and pool bar.
We arranged two visits independently with a guy on the beach `Sunny`s Tours`. Much cheaper than reps tours but you still need to negotiate. We paid £60 for 3 people to go to Galle for the day, and £45 to visit Brief Garden, the home of the brother of Geoffrey Bawa one of Sri Lanka`s top architects. The house is full of art, plus lots of pictures and sculptures of young men! The guy never married.
The beach is long and empty with just fishing boats. The sea was swimmable for the first few days, but became very rough with a dangerous undercurrent. The lifeguards were very busy blowing whistles to stop people going too deep. The hotel pool is very good though.

This is a nice hotel on the beach with good public areas, frendly and helpful staff, very good food and well kept. Only irritations were 1. for 124 rooms the pool areas only had 15 parasols. 2. same piped music in dining room every meal unless live music. 3. Selected guests had tables reserved for them in the restaurant. This is fine if they are blind or disabled but these are in the minority. As one guest put it " we all pay the same so we should all be treated the same" tables for dinner at certain times could be difficult you see. It is a system that makes some guests second class. 4.If you are with Thomas Cook on all inclusive it does not include a galss of wine with dinner. Everything in the mini bar fridge is chargeable including the water even if on all inclusive. 5. At least once during your stay there will be a day when no alcohol is served due to Full Moon or another festival, this is government law.

Limited areas for your drinks and food, all other areas are charged ie stake approx £40.00. Service was slow for drinks in the bar. Also entertainment was poor so you went to bed early. Restaurant hard to find a layed up table after 1st use drinks with meal slow. railway just outside hotel runs from 4.30am until late our room was no more than 75 to 100 mtrs from track. wakinig us up early every day. Make sure there is no full moon on your stay as no alcohol is sold all day in Sri Lanka.

IN short: very good hotel.
One minus point: they are a bit ridiculous on the all-inn formula: e;g; in some bars of the hotel you can the tea for free while in others not although in that last bar you can get soda for free??
