“Fabulous stay very welcoming and friendly staff”

What a wonderful stay we had in this hotel. After our long journey the lovely greeting and warm welcome when we arrived,a cool drink in our hands and a warm towel to refresher us.Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff.Plenty of choice of food which was always hot and delicious puddings always presented well. Our room was lovely though the bathroom could have been updated a bit but it was nothing to complain about.Clean towels and sheets everyday and on our last day our room boy had written goodbye in petals on our bed which was a lovely personal touch and very considerate in the time it must have taken him to do .We would personally recommend this hotel to anyone and go back there again in the future.

Room Tip: Room 233 overlooking pool and seaview

I know im doing this the other way round but i am about to go to the Tangerine Beach in a couple of weeks time and cant wait! Judging by the looks of the reviews, im in for an enjoyable stay. I wondered if anyone could recommend suitable transport. I am going with my family, one of which is elderly and am wanting a man with a van for the 8 day duration. We have got a price to be collected from the airport and taken to our hotel which i understand is around a 2 hour journey, and have been quoted 65 USD (£43) which seems awfully expensive, and that is only one way! Any help anyone could offer here would be greatly appreciated.

We stayed at the tangerine beach for three night all inclusive, The beach had a red flag showing for the duration of our stay. I don't think they ever changed the flag for the changing sea conditions. We could not get served at the bar at night, they were reluctant to serve us, everybody was complaining about the dreadful service. If you are visiting Sri Lanca dont stay here.

My wife and I have just returned from a 14 day stay at the Tangerine Beach Hotel, and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We have stayed in better appointed hotels throughout the world, but can't remember one that was as warm, friendly and welcoming as the TBH.
I believe the hotel is around 30 years old, and some areas are a little dated, but in a way this adds to the charm. We were very well greated with cold drinks and a refreshing towel which is nice after a long journey. Even more importantly we had emailed several days before requesting a higher floor room and double bed, which was exactly what we got with a wonderful view of the Indian Ocean.
With very few exceptions the staff are extremely friendly, helpful, and well trained. We met the Asst. Manager Arju Vijayarajah on our first day, who was very visible and approachable throughout our stay. His style of management was apparant throughout his team.
Our room was spacious, well fitted out and clean, and we had clean towels and bed linen everyday. Two bottles of water were provided each day and there were tea making facilities in the room. Our room number was 337 and I would recommend it, there is some noise from a large air conditioning unit at the back of the hotel but after a day or so you didn't notice it.
We were All Inclusive which meant we visited the restaurant quite alot, we found it was better to go for dinner around 8.30pm when the initial rush had died down. The food here was excellent, very varied, never warmed up, a great way to try lots of different Sri Lankan dishes as well as European. Although we are not vegitarian we enjoyed many of the dishes that were available. The waiters were tremendous, so helpful and friendly if you make the effort, make sure you meet " Naughty Boy " in the naughty corner.
The a la carte sea food restaurant is well worth a visit, if you are able to sit at tables near the beach, but be aware when booking. There is a rather over enthusiastic waiter there promoting the facility, be very specific as to whether you have pre ordered something should you wish to cancel your booking. We had a minor problem there which was promptly and professionally sorted out following a quick chat with Asst. Manager Arju.
The pool area is very clean, and the pool attendants will always find you a bed. We like wildlife so found the Chipmunks, Crows and Monitor Lizards very entertaining, but if you don't like these things they are not a problem. The beach is lovely and clean with a few harmless hawkers, but the sea is dangerously rough and even strong swimmers should be aware.
Don't take too much notice about comments regarding Russian visitors, the hotel is consciously looking to reduce their numbers, and replace with other nationalities. They are incredibly rude, noisy and lacking social skills, but we actually found there rudeness highly entertaining, and they keep themseleves to themselves anyway.
A great holiday is made up of a number of things not just the hotel, Sri Lanka is lovely and the people are really friendly, even the endless droves trying to sell you trips or a riveting quick guide to the local area are part of the culture. Try using the trains from the nearby station, they are easy to use and very inexpensive, taking in lovely views.
We met some great people in the hotel, too many to mention but a special hello to Sheila and Arndrew a lovely couple from Scotland. Coudn't understand a word they we saying, but they helped make our holiday.
Do not take any notice of very negative reviews relating to this hotel, they are usually placed by competition, people who have not done their homework and were expecting 5* plus, or just nutters!
We would definately recommend this hotel.

We were desperate for winter sun and not disappointed here. Very clean rooms, staff always helpful, pool big, extensive food choices and friendly other British guests. Can't say the same for some other nationalities! Talking to other guests in the pool, we learned about the excellent dressmaker across the road from the hotel - beautifully made to measure cotton dresses ready in 24hrs at £8 time - and the brilliant Sanka - turn left out of the hotel, over ther railway and his shop is there. He organised a brilliant four day tour for us to see Kandy, Dambullah, Sigirya and then through the hill country and tea plantations to Yala National Park and back along the south coast through Galle. Excellent hotels with dinner overnight and breakfast and a minibus just for two of us, apart from the driver and Sanka who came with us to make sure we had the best of everything and more besides. At the elephant orphanage, we were among a very few who could bottle feed the little ones, we had the best seats to see the elephants coming down to the river to bathe, rode an elephant and our final visit on our mini-tour was to see day old turtles at the sanctuary and release them into the sea at sunset. We could stop whenever we wanted, we saw and did more than expected and it was cheaper than the organised tours.

Room Tip: The air con plant is noise is bad near some rooms. Upstairs room have sea views; you can only see th...

Wounderful hotel to stay in, everybody genuinley very friendly. We up-graded to a superior room which was a good move, very peaceful and very comfortable. All the staff were lovelly especially Kumara on reception who was always very helpful. Just outside the hotel were a small group of local shops which i loved, don't be affraid to go in them i got some real bargins. Loved the Tangerine and would not hesitate to return again sometime.

Room Tip: ask for a superior suite away from the centre of the hotel.

Okay, so this hotel isn't perfect, but if you take all the positives and skip over the less pleasant aspects such as the behaviour and attitude of a certain couple of nationalities (which is hardly the fault of the hotel) then there's a lot of good to be said for the Tangerine Beach Hotel. The staff, from Reception to room boys to the lovely waiters, animation team and the pool boys, were all eager to please, usually with a beaming smile on their face. Our room was delightful and spotlessly clean, and even though the bathroom was in need of a facelift, it didn't really matter. The food was fine, plenty of variety, but another all-inclusive dining venue would have been welcome, even if it was at lunchtime. We enjoyed the terrace bar in the evenings, catching up on the experience of our trips over a G &T (or 4!) with the other UK guests.and relaxing/recovering the next day in the hotel grounds, which was relatively quiet and peaceful. All in all, we would thoroughly recommend this hotel.
