The Hotel was very good for our family stay. We stayed in 5 hotels when we where in Sri Lanka and The Sands happens to be the best hotel we have stayed in Sri Lanka. A perfect hotel for beach lovers and swimming pool lovers. My Kids enjoyed staying in The Sands. The rooms are facing the Sea and it looks very nice during day & evening time. There is a gym which is also facing the sea which is neatly maintained with necessary equipments. The restaurant has a buffet spread in the evening which is very tasty and lots of options for Europeans and Asians. Overall a very good hotel

The hotel has been designed beautifully with a large pool that come with a jacuzzi for the traveller looking for relaxation. The highlight for me was the beautiful cabana rooms with a great view of the sea. Which would certainly get the attention of honeymooners. The cabanas are near the pool so it is easy access for anyone. The hotel has friendly staff. However, they need to employ more staff at the front. The restaurants need to have a better service and a menu. Overall it was a great stay.

I cant rate this hotel highly, the food was poor and repetative, the beds were 3/4 in width for 2 adults, the staff were poor. if you go A/I you can only have certain beers (none bottled) and a limited cocktail menu. Anything else that is not on the AI list you have to pay for. We had a family of 4 but only allowed 3 towels per day. I have stayed in much better hotels and for the price we payed it certainly wasnt worth it. I would not use this hotel again and wouldnt rate it 4 star. The location of the hotel is not within walking distance of any aminaties. The sea is not swimmable and the beach is dirty, not recomended

Wanted to celebrate my wife's birthday away from the city and have a relaxing weekend at the same time. We received an excellent family suite consisting of master bedroom with a King sized bed, top quality Celsius Pillows and luxury bedding, a full bathroom with a Bathtub. The second room had 2 twin sized beds with luxury bedding, and a bathroom with a shower stall. The Suite also had a living room and a dining room. The suite had a long balcony with Patio furniture, overlooking the pool and beach area. We never had issues with mosquitoes or any any other type of bug (but that may depend on the time of year as well), and we did not have to use any kind of insect repellent or plug-in device.

The meal plan was full board. The Sands culinary crew is a truly talented lot. Supervised by Chef Sunith, the kitchen turns out a mouth watering assortment of Eastern and Western dishes, that will satisfy even the most discerning palate. We were never disappointed with the meal time offerings.

The Rooms, common areas and the dining lounges are clean, and the wait staff attentive and courteous. If you require Wi-Fi access, just ask the front desk, and you’ll receive a userid/password free of charge for broadband access.

It’s the little touches that sets this hotel apart from others, like the Birthday cake delivered to the dining table during dinner, or setting our minds at ease, that a particular dish did not contain any kind of Tree or ground nut, as my daughter is heavily allergic to Nuts. The chef visited us during a couple of meals to inquire if everything was up to our satisfaction. The family really enjoyed the outing. Will definitely add this property to the list of ‘must visit again’, and will recommend to friends and family.

Room Tip: Family Suites are great for families with 2-3 kids. cabanas are not connected to the main building...

Just returned from a 10 day stay at the Sands and whilst we had a great holiday, we had a mixed experience in respect of the hotel.

Positives

The room was excellent with a large living area and longest balcony I've ever seen in a hotel room. We had some issues with bugs and bites from them. We did get a plug-in zapper but only on the second last day after four or five prompts to the front desk.

The food is amazing! Although it may be strane to have the option for curry, breakfast, lunch and dinner, the choice and variety of the curries was brilliant. I can't praise the chefs enough for the quality of the food. We ate in the buffet restaurant every night bar one and the choice of "conventional" food as well as curries was incredible.

The only issue was the night we ate in the Yacht as the food was brought from the main kitchen and was cold by the time it arrived. Very nice room and attentive service but spoiled by this crazy arrangement.

The staff are all extremely friendly and always acknowledged you in passing. They also went out of their way to help when asked (apart from the bug zapper).

The drinks arrangement was fine and no issues with the quality. I did find it strange that you could have unlimited water in your room and mini bar but if you asked for a bottle in the bar, you were expected to pay extra. Small inconsistencies like this create the wrong impression.

As such I would never class this as an all inclusive. I know it is unfair to compare the Sands to Sandals Resorts as the costs involved are totally different but I think every guest needs to be aware up front what "all-inclusive" actually includes.

My wife took the spa package and found it extremely good value with first class staff.

As previous reviews have mentioned, the sea is pretty rough and not really conducive to swimming. Therefore it would be unfair to criticise the hotel for not doing anything involving water sports as the choice would be quite limited.

Negatives

I am sorry to say that the main disappointment relating to our holiday was the quality of entertainment. During the day the team of "motivators" went through the same routine. Pool Aerobics, Water Polo and Croquet. There was no variety and most disappointing was the lack of any attempt to introduce any activity when the weather was bad. Although no fault of the hotel we had 4 days of rain during the day and the hotel offered nothing for the guests to pass the time when sunbathing was out of the equation.

Worst of all was the evening entertainment.

Bearing in mind that there is nothing outwith the hotel, it is important that the "captive audience" of the guests are treated to decent entertainment. Out of the 10 nights stay, there was a "disco" 3 nights. The guy had no interaction and the music was played constantly but no change was made when it was obvious that the age of the guests suggested a different approach. There were 3 shows with local cultural entertainers which were excellent but went on for too long. Two other nights with a duo who tried to bring the guests into the act with "singalongs". One karaoke night and nothing at all the other night.

The bar used for the entertainment is effectively the pool bar during the day and apart from around 12 chairs with cushions, the only other seats are the chairs which are used by guests during the day and therefore covered with sun tan lotion and not very comfy.

All in all, not what I expected for nightlife and a major disappointment.

To finishon a positive note. We arranged all trips out the hotel with Jack, who is located at the beach and offers alternative tours to the official rep tours. He is incredible and a great "fixer" who can arrange everything from trips to Kandy and the elephant orphanage to shopping trips to local jewellers and nearby Kalutara. I have no hesitation in recommending him for future guests.

In conclusion, whilst the hotel is clean, well maintained and the staff are friendly and helpful with great food, I would be reluctant to return unless the entertainment dramatically improved.

I leave it to others to decide if the Sands is the place for them.

Room Tip: Try a room above ground level to get a betterview of the sea.
