“The Sands Kalutara - an amazing hotel with amazing service”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

We stayed at the Sands from 10th April 2013 for 2 weeks. We had a suite on the 5th floor which was amazing and the view was superb. The service from the room boy was first class and he even made sure that any laundry was back in the room and hung up within the hour. The food in the buffet restaurant was excellent and the head chef was always on hand to attend to any special requests we had. We were there over the Sri Lankan New Year and the management organised games and cocktail parties for all the guests to enjoy. The problem with the sun beds has now been taken care of and there are plenty to go round. the staff in the bars especially cicera and nishanta and the younger boys was first class. The general Manager was always noticeable by his presence which is not often seen in other hotels and was always interested in how your holiday was.The beach boys especially Jack were very friendly as were the local people and the tailor "Chami" was very reasonable. Please do not let anyone be put off by any reviews you may have read as this hotel is certainly among the best in the area. We cannot wait to go back

Room Tip: The rooms on the higher floors have a far better view

Not long got back from our honeymoon here at the Sands and it was just the place to have a really relaxing time and be pampered. Our room was huge 2 large queen beds which were put together. Daily were the towels put into amazing shapes elephants, crocodiles. swans and butterflies.
The room boys were excellent and would do anything for you.
The food was excellent and a lot of choice currys and international to choose. One of the downsides was that though it said smart casual for dinner quite a few people just wore shorts. We decided to go to the Yacht restaurant on a few nights and made sure that we dressed up for this.
We were all inclusive so could have the local alcoholic drinks which were not bad but you had to pay for wine which was not so good. Also we had to pay for diet coke why??
The pool was lovely to swim in or to cool down in. The sea was a little bit rough, okay for adults who can swim but not very safe for children. We had great fun being buffeted by the waves.
One criticism the Sands do not publish the dollar rate that they use to sell things to you which is different (and costs you more) to the published exchanged rate.
Would we go back no not because the place is bad but the world is too small. But for our honeymoon we have come back really relaxed and yes we had a wonderful time.

Room Tip: Ask for one that is on the higher floors

This has to be one of my favourite places to stay down south. I love the lobby area as it's huge and really breezy. Their cabanas totally rule and there are comfortable and clean. Their pillows are the softest.

Huge fan of their buffet. The spread is vast and is utterly tasty. Everyone is catered to, be it local or tourist. Their staff is super friendly and we even got a lovely dish of peanut and sprat fry dropped off at our table after we mentioned that we loved it.

The front office staff is really friendly and interacts well with the guests. Nishan the animator conducts a fun water aerobics session- a must do if you're there.

We thoroughly enjoy staying at this lovely hotel. We always get the cabanas since that's our favourite. The rooms are clean, not too cramped up and offer all the amenities required. The beds are also very comfy and the sitting area on the balcony is another wonderful way to soak up the atmosphere.
The food is always great. Their buffet offers a great variety and it's quite tasty. The pool is very interesting and it's nice that their jacuzzi is now operational. Do look out for their animator, Nishan. He's a hive of activity and will get you moving, especially during water aerobics. He's a wonderful human being who wants to ensure you have a great time.
The staff is lovely, warm, friendly and genuine-the guest relation officers, the front office staff and even the cooks and waitstaff.
All in all a lovely place to spend a couple of days.

Room Tip: Get the cabanas

Just got back from our 2 week honeymoon here and we were very impressed with the hotel. Our room (standard) was large and very clean, we had the most delightful room boy who put fresh flowers in our room every day and went over and beyond (they do want a tip at the end). We found the range of food in the main restaurant fantastic and there was always a lot of choice and variety. The dine around thing is a myth though, same food in a different location unless you pay for the a la carte - which we did 1 night and it was really good quality with fantastic service. The only real down point i can think of is that wine is not included in the all inclusive, i bought some wine some evenings but the house stuff was not very nice and the same price as in the UK so soon switched onto the cocktails which got better and better as the holiday went om , i think as the bar staff got to know you they put more effort in!. All the staff were amazing, friendly and happy, everyone that we encounted outside the hotel was also very welcoming and proud of their country which makes a nice change from the UK. They warn you about swimming in the sea but we loved it and went in twice a day, i would not let small children swim in the sea though only paddle as you do need to be a strong and confident swimmer.
We would definitly go back some time

Room Tip: The higher the better

On arrival at the hotel we received a warm welcome and quick check-in to our room which was much needed after the long tiring journey from London and in particular the last two plus hours transfer from the airport. Our room on the fifth floor was spacious and comfortable with a large bed, sitting area with two arm chairs, a modern bathroom with a great shower and a balcony with a fantastic sea view.
All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful and the Room Boy responded quickly to requests for blankets, more bottled water and fresh pool towels as did the Restaurant and Front Desk staff, in contrast the staff in the two bars although friendly were very slow. The Animators around the pool were really friendly and worked hard to get the guests to join in the various activities they organised every day. The pool was large and generally quiet but the sea was a bit of a let down as it was always rough and swimming was difficult.
Generally speaking the food was good with plenty of choice at all meals especially of fresh fruit, salads, vegetables, meat and fish dishes, curries and desserts although often the meat was not the tenderest the exception was the roast leg of pork on Sundays. I also felt that the choice of drinks included in the All Inclusive package was very limited.
All in all a great place for a relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: Go for the fifth floor.
