“Good place for groups with so many activities on offer”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2013

Laya Leisure Kukuleganga offers accommodation in villas. There are one, two, and three bedroomed villas. Meals are to be purchased separately. The setting within the resort is great although you have to cover some ground to get from one place to another. Check-in was prompt.

The air conditioned single bedroom villa we occupied had basic amenities. The bed was quite stiff. The bathroom was cramped. There was a spot of wet wall and a rotten door frame which didn't look too good. No mini bar. The villa also has a kitchen section with a full-sized refrigerator, oven with stove top and microwave oven, but cooking is not allowed. TV choice is adequate.

All three meals were offered as buffet with barbeque stations for Saturday dinner. Meal variety was good at lunch and dinner but breakfast didn't offer much. Food was just OK.

One great thing about this resort is the amount of activities it provides. It has a good swimming pool, tennis, volleyball, badminton and squash courts, air-rifle shooting, archery, billiard, a gym, a playground and many more. The resort also has a mini-mart.

A few kilometres uphill you can visit the Makeli ella waterfall which is beautiful. It has an observation deck so viewing is safe, but the steep descent to the deck might be difficult for physically-challenged persons.

Staff were courteous and helpful but not overtly friendly. Service was prompt.

Because they check each villa before finalizing the bill, make sure you leave aside at least 15 minutes for check out.

Because of its surrounding and relatively close proximity to Colombo (less than 100km), Laya Leisure is a great place to stay and engage in activities without spending much time en route. The resort is best for groups (e.g. company trips).

Room Tip: Avoid going to Kukuleganga during rainy seasons as flooding is a common occurence in these areas dur...

Kukuleganga Holiday Resort, now known as "Laya Leisure" is a lovely location to go and rest, relax, not that far away from colombo (a 2 hour drive) and there are many activities as well (at nominal additional costs, and it's close to many attractions such as sinharaja etc. The rooms are exceptional, more like apartments, but i feel the per night charges were slightly on the high side. Another minus would be that they do not allow more than 5 people in a single room apartments, so if you're travelling with big families like I did, you might have to go for double or triple room apartments, which may turn out to be quite expensive! However, the buffet prices are ridiculously high in comparison to the variety and taste they offer, which is very limited. I had a soup - Chicken sweet corn, which was very watery. cleanliness wise it was very good, the rooms were cleaned regularly, pool was good and spacious, only lacking some macsliders or fun aspect in the kid's pool. Definitely would go back again, hoping to get better food though, or at least the same food at lower rates :) oh btw, for everything, there's a 10&% Tax applicable. :/

This place was not far away from Colombo. (approximately 80KM) Whether is bit ok but not cool. Specially sunny day difficult to work around within resort. We went there 16 bunch of people and brought 2 cottages. Cottages condition is pair enough for us. But this resort also maintain by SL forces. They are not well trained for hospitality/respect. Even way the communication also not good.(kin of order discipline).

They have Buffet in common area. They have very cheap level concept here, you should have token to enter in to dining area :). Then you should show your token and take plate. Mostly they have local dishes; those are not good compare with price.

Kukuleganga Holiday Resort is now renamed as 'Laya Leisure'. It's the only kind of place in the area and is in close proximity to tourist attractions such as Pahiyangala Cave, Makeli Falls, etc. Accommodation is cottages and the resort offers various activities (pool, archery, boat riding...) and sports (cricket, tennis, badminton...) to play. The buffet comprises of local menus and is not very big or rich in variety. Another thing is the less foliage in the premises. Hence it could get real hot and sweaty if you opt to stay outdoors.

I was here with my family and friends in 2008 .the hotel is famous for it’s location where it was earlier a hydro power project office and now converted to a Resort .they have apartments completed with furniture ,pantry ,living room ,dining area ..etc (it’s like you’re staying in you own place )apartments are categorized from one to three room apartments, the weather is normally cool their and you can have lot’s of activities such as cycling ,hiking, badminton, tennis….etc

But there are drawbacks to this place the pool had a high chlorine level, and i couldn’t open my eyes for sometime after swimming. When i inquire they said they will look in to it. The Buffet was not that much most of it are local dishes and doesn’t have that eye catching looks. Some apartment are located bit far from the restaurant and you have to walk some distance to get their.
