“Just a pond”

Nilavarai Bottomless Well
Ranked #19 of 32 things to do in Jaffna
Attraction details
Reviewed July 20, 2013

I wouldn't travel to the Jaffna area just to see this. It is a pond/well about the surface area of half a football field (average any code) and apparently it is bottomless. It is in the middle of an arid, dirty, unkempt, field, with litter all around. Not a highlight

Its quite a hidden little treasure...you have to know where to look to find it, but most of the tuk tuk drivers will know. Its flanked by a little shop and a hindu temple, the waters are dirty and the surrounding area is poorly kept, but the mystery surrounding this is quite interesting. There is a theory that there is a connection from this well to the Matale tank which is hundres of miles away, tests were apparently done on the water at both locations which indicated that they had the same readings. However no one knows for sure where the water originates, or how deep the well actually is. Divers have tried on many occasions to assess the depth, to no avail. Legend has it that Hanuman shot his arrow to quench Rama's thirst, and this is where the arrow landed.
I think if it was better maintained, this could be a fabulous little treasure trove. I wouldn't go visit it again, the stories and theories behind it held more appeal to me.

The Nilavarai Bottomless Well at Nawathkiri is another frequently visited place in the Jaffna peninsula. There are no definite reports about the depth of the well.

This place was more like a tank and couldn't really see much although the story goes that there is no end to this well and many divers have actually died trying to find the bottom.
