glad to see the Fort being restored... but not sure how far the restoration would go... it would be good if the 'gallery' under the rampart had more light, and if it had a presentation that showed restoration plans...

Fort has been upgraded by LTEE, bombed by Sri Lankans and is now being repaired (with help of Dutch gouvernment).

It is a good pace to breath history and this place has also a calme ambiance. Luckely it is now (2014) still free to enter.

When it was intact , the Jaffna Fort was a showcase Dutch Fort, with beautiful fortifications, buttresses, the famous Kruys Kirk , clock tower, gallows, Governor's Residence etc. The setting too is beautiful -- overlooking the lagoon, a great place to be at dawn and dusk. It a vast place for a fort.

Then the Civil War came along and took its toll -- there were many battles fought here , resulting in the destruction of the beautiful buildings and ebven some of the walls.

The Fort is under renovation -- a joint effort of the Sri Lankan and Dutch Governments -- and the entrance, plus some of the walls have been completed but there is still a long way to go.

Meanwhile, it is still possible to admire and enjoy the restored parts, the setting and the exhibition of pictures --- for those who remember the Fort as it was, it is also a sad reminder of the destruction this war inflicted.

The old Fort in Jaffna was damaged quite heavily during the war and it is only now being restored in easy stages. I can understand it being a huge undertaking but so far from what I've seen I've been impressed. And there are great views of the lagoon, the Old Library and the Clock tower.

The only draw back - the original fort was constructed with Coral, and with the restoration work you can see that they are using coral again - I understand that to restore an object you must stay as true to the original work as possible, but with current knowledge of erosion and destruction of the sea beds from using Coral I'm sure they could have found an alternative!.......

This is one beautiful piece of Dutch architecture. Now in the process of being renovated. Really enjoyed the walk in this fort.
