“For now, would only do with a guide”
Reviewed June 7, 2014

Getting to this island is the hardest part. Similarly knowing which ferries go where and when is a nightmare. Save yourself worry and panic and take this trip with a guide who should organise transport for you once on Delft. The island facilities are basic, as are some of the roads you will travel on. However, there are some great sights including historical ruins from Dutch and British, wild horse and other wildlife plus wonderful safe beaches. Food choices will be limited so be prepared to eat as the locals do. Was well worth the trip but boat transport to and from the island is very slow and would only want to do in fine weather conditions.

“Delft Island- Jaffna- Quite exhausting but good experience”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

Have to take 2hrs tough boat ride. Boat has no cover .and it is quite exhausting trip in the hot sun. No good Restaurents or Water /food available in this Island. this it is advise to take your own water food for this journey ?Boat leaves at sharp 9am and return journey from the Island is 2.30pm . You can hire a small jeep or lorry to travel in side the Island , Same will cost you 2000-3000 rupees. You have take the bus or private vehicle hired to go the jetty KKD . You can see all roaming wild horses. Ruins of Old Dutch court house and hospital ,and a church . one small boutique sells short eats and drinks . This is the one and only hotel. Boats always overcrowded since only limited number of boats available .you can pecked to Nagadeepa temple after seen this place

“Long journey to a desolate island”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

The journey to Delft island was half the pleasure (and pain) of the experience. We took a 6:40am bus from Jaffna to the port, and then the 9am boat which was extremely overcrowded and HOT! The island itself is dusty and completely flat. We rented a tuktuk for 1500 rupees for 2 hours for a guided tour. I can't say the sights were very exciting, but the place is different than anywhere you've probably seen! The "wild" horses were actually owned by someone as most of them had markings on their sides. Very few tourists (we didn't see any others actually) so it makes for a unique experience. On the way back we caught a larger private boat for 60 rupees - glad to be on an near empty boat as the sea got quite rough. Other reviewers said there are no restaurants or shops but this has changed - there is a small restaurant where you can get traditional food/snacks and drinks.

“An amazing journey”
Reviewed February 21, 2014

We visited this island yesterday. It really is a special place, unlike anywhere else we have visited. There is not an amazing amount to see there, but the island feels a million miles away from Sri Lanka. The journey there is part of the experience involving a bumpy tuk tuk or bus ride across causeways and islands to the ferry terminal. The boat is not for the faint hearted! It is an open boat, no seats or life jackets, a one hour journey with about 120 people aboard on the day we travelled. There are some small shops selling food near the ferry landing stage on the island and we did see one place to stay. We took a tuk tuk tour of the island for 1500R which was the best way to travel round. Overall a great experience.

“Combine the visit to Delft island and the Nainativu island....”
Reviewed January 28, 2014

One small advice would be to combine the Delft island visit and the Nainativu island visit.... You have to be there on the KKD departure jetty on some MONDAY, THURSDAY OR FRIDAY (On these days you have the free ferry service to Delft), before 0900AM, catch the ferry trip to Delft island and return back from their by the 1430 Hrs boat, back to KKD (Reaching KKD at about 1620 hrs) departure jetty and then hop in the ferry trip to Nainativu... Because Ferry for Delft island is very limited at this time... for Nainativu island visit there is a ferry at interval of every 20-25 MINUTES.

The accommodation facility is being constructed at Delft island
.. they plan to get it operational in 2014 , but I think it may take little more longer

By doing this you can save your trip to KKD for seeing the other island.
