“An ideal place to visit in jaffna”

A totally different experience can be achieved by visiting the largest island in Sri lanka. This include the1 hr free of charge ferry journey which is a amazing experience.
If planning for one day visit the first boat is at 9.00 from the Kurikadduwan jetty ( The same jetty which is also used to start the boat journey to Nagadeepa) and the ride is free of charge. last boat departs from the island at 2.30. So you have 4 hrs to see the island. There 2-3 dimo batta lorries with seats to hire (3000 Rs) or there are 3 wheelers. ( Even CTB buses- But on main roads only)
Attractions include Old Dutch fort, Old Hospital, Pigeon Tower, Growing stone, Adam's foot, several lakes, The 2nd largest Biobab tree in SL, Ruins of old dutch horse shed, Ruins of a Stupa and the spectacular view of wild horses touring free.
Lunch can be arranged on pre arrangement with the only hotel at the entrance to the island.
Best time to visit is the wet period because in the dry season there is lime dust all over.
There is a Large navy camp here and no security issues.
It takes one hr from Jaffna to the Jetty where the boat starts.

“Do Not Miss”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2014

Delft island is a must do if you visit Jaffna. It will take a few hours to travel there and back but don't let this put you off. The ferry ride to the island, which takes an hour, is an experience in itself. If you can try and stay on the outside of the ferry, which may require wearing a lift jacket as the staff insist you do, do so. You can sit on the roof in the sun and take in the view. On the island hiring a three wheeler is a must to see all the sights and to get chatting with a local. The island is not set up for tourism yet and after enquiring about accommodation and food we recommend that you do not miss the 2:30pm ferry ride back to the mainland each day as the alternative at this time is grim.

one hour boat ride to island, and it was a amazing experience for us. Climate, Geological features, and animal diversity totally different from other areas in jaffna. beach is awesome. There were lots of fresh sea foods, and villagers are able to cook them tasty.... i really love to go there again

“.. a land before time..”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

The island is one on the best things to see in Jaffna. Situated 1 hour by boat from Kurikedduwan (which is again 1 hour by bus from Jaffna Main Town) it s distance from the mainland has resulted in both its natural environment and local's lifestyles to be preserved as if it were from a few hundred years ago. It is a must-see for anyone who appreciates serene atmosphere and unspoiled nature.

(1) Take a bus from Jaffna Central Bus Stand to Kurikedduwan . The first bus is at 6 40 am. Take this one because the ride is 1 hour long.. and you will miss the only boat to Delft Island if you take the next bus at 7 20 am. The ride is through the Kayts Causeway and is extremely beautiful.

(2) The last stop is the dock/jetty for the boats. The jetty is controlled by the Sri Lankan Navy and they are extremely helpful.
TIP : If you are a foreigner (non-Sri Lankan), then upon showing your passport, you may be ensured a seat (by skipping the line) as the line for the locals can be really long. That happened with us. Carry your passport as the Navy might require to see it.

(3) The first and ONLY morning boat is at 9 am. (sometimes they even leave about 10 mins) so to be on the safe side, be at the jetty by 8 - 8 15 am. There is one boat at 12 noon but if visitors catch that one, they wont be able the catch a ride back after seeing the island.

(4) The boat ride is free. It also sways a lot and is very closed with small windows.. hence travelers with motion / sea sickness.. take measures.

Visitors can hire a tuk (for 1 - 3 people) or an open air vehicle.. Tuk will cost about 1500 rupees. To see the island without a motorized ride is impossible unless on wishes to stay back the night.
To see: Remains of Dutch Fort, Dutch Pigeon Hole, growing rock, giant tree, wild horses (very lovely!) etc.

Again, the ONLY after mid-day boat back from the island is at 2 30 pm. Be at the jetty at least half an hour prior unless one wishes to stay back or be stranded in the island.

NOTE THAT : there are no washroom/toilets in the island for visitors. Either visitors can request locals to use their washrooms, or they can use the one in the Delft Hospital (which is conveniently located in the site of the Dutch Fort remains).
Bicycle would be a good form or transportation, but there are no places to hire them.
There are no restaurants (only tea and small snacks may be found) hence carry your own food and water. There are also no arrangements for accommodation for visitors.

Even with all these limitations, Delft is very worth a visit. :)

“Unspoiled place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

I loved this place. Totally unspoiled and still can breath very clean air in the absence of vehicles. It is a remote island which preserve it 's original beauty. The beach is fantastic. It is a unique place to be with wild horses. The only thing i hated was the boat trip to this Island. It was very rocky and hence must shut their eyes to avoid feeling nauseous. But i was so glad that i visited the place. One cannot find any other place like this any where else.
