“Small rooms but clean...”

This is a very decent place to stay in if you are on a business trip to Jaffna. Very friendly and supportive staff. No problem with communication as most of the staff members can speak Tamil, English and Sinhala.

Room Tip: Rooms on the third floor are the best......

Gnanams Hotel is situated in Jaffna town itself. It is built around an internal courtyard and provides an oasis in a bustling town. This means you get a good night's sleep. Staff are courteous and friendly and most speak some English. We stayed for one night on half-board.

The rooms are quite small but there is air-conditioning as well as a fan, a TV (with BBC World). There are no tea/coffee making facilities but be warned that unless you ask not to be disturbed you will be woken about 6 a.m. by a smiling room-boy and a cup of tea!

You can choose to eat in the courtyard or inside the restaurant. The chef asked us to choose our menu on arrival and asked us to choose a time for our dinner. The meal was very good and there was a choice of Sri Lankan and Western dishes.

The bathroom was basic but there is hot water if you play about with the electric shower. Shaving is difficult as there is no hot water in the sink. Soap and shampoo sachets are provided and there were nice fluffy towels.

The hotel provides free Wi-Fi in public areas. You may experience short power-cuts but the hotel staff soon manage to get the lights back on.

In this area which has experienced the sadness of civil war tourism is just beginning to grow and tourists can feel quite safe and enjoy the many places of interest.

I booked two single rooms. The single rooms are very small but clean.good for the money spend, nice and friendly staff, they can speak English,Tamil and Sinhala language. Hot water, mini fridge, wall mounted TV AC are there. They have few verities for breakfast.if you are booking bb basis think twice.

This hotel is average overall and a decent place as it is but the one thing that any tourist needs to be careful of is what the prices are. You need to have them give them to you in writing. I was told that breakfast included with my room rate was Rs. 5500 so went to breakfast the first day but we had to pay extra for some reason. We complained to the management about this but they told us not to worry about this as they would take care of it before we left. However, the day we left, we were told to pay the extra amount for breakfast that first day.

Sometimes, it seems that one person says one thing and another person, something else so be careful and get everything in writing.

Friendly staff willing to help any time, anyway. Rooms are spacious, but basic. Most channels in the TV are Tamil and would be better to have more English channels as well. Food range is not that great but clean and nice.

Room Tip: All are same. But if you have old companions, suggest you insist on ground floor as there is no lift...

After a 30 years war they came to a good position as jaffna people but hotels need more improvements. Rooms are specious but the bathroom is old and water pressure is low as well as smelly to. ordinary Tamil food for the breakfast such as "Thosai, Waddai, itley etc". The place is small and the working people is friendly. They don't provide turn down services at the end of the day.

Room Tip: Down floor rooms are easy (108, 109)

This is a fairly large business mans hotel in the centre of Jaffna. The rooms are quite large though basic. We found they were dark because they have permanently drawn curtains and the bathroom although fully functional was very narrow and pokey. We were there 7th and 8th January 2013 when unfortunately the monsoon returned with a vengence. The only sitting area seemed to be in the courtyard outside. The restaraunt was again very basic but the food quite good. During our visit I had a minor accident away from the hotel and we found the staff very dilligent in the help they offered to us. The front desk were very helpful in arranging transport for us during our stay, and also for our onward journey, which was also effected by awful weather, but they kept in touch with us and our driver all day to ensure we were left safely at a hastily rearranged destination.
