Just returned from Sri Lanka where I spent 3 nights at the Villa Kusum. The setting, right on the Indian Ocean was very relaxing. My room was quite large and had a terrace overlooking the sea....how beautiful. On a whole the Villa could have used some better decorating and attention to detail but the staff more than made up for this. Dinesh the hotel manager was GRADE A. He prepared wonderful meals and was so pleasant to talk with. Patum (hope I am spelling your name correctly) and the rest of the staff always made sure your every need was met. The villa is just a short tuk-tuk ride away from Hikkaduwa. The staff were really wonderful and made my last stop in Sri Lanka something special.

Staying at Villa kusum turned out to be the holiday I had always dreamed about. The privacy, the peacefulness, the amazing location on the beach and the staffs' devotion to making our stay so personal and relaxing all contributed to this. Our friendly hosts, Lammert and Jan, are always anxious to enquire if more can be done to make you feel at home, from our very first welcome to our last moments at Villa Kusum. We stayed in the Ceylon Suite, with its balcony view of the ocean and the relaxing sound of the waves ever present. Dinish, the chef, served the most exquisite and personally tailored meals, ranging from fine european cuisine to a beaultiful Sri Lankan banquet, served at our table bedecked in white blossoms. Sunset cocktails, morning and mid-afternoon tea, all left us feeling privileged and pampered. An absolute gem!

This is a perfect place to relax, be lazy, enjoy quiet atmosphere of this elegant small villa, and let the skilful owners and their experienced staff make sure you are having holiday of your dreams.
From the arrival to the airport in Colombo to the moment of my departure, the owners made sure, in their own unobtrusive way, that any request I had was taken care of, and made sure to provide as big a choice of anything - food, ideas for free time, drivers, suggestions - one may desire.
This is a nice place for a quiet holiday. If you like to dive, eat great food prepared by in house chef, read on the terrace and enjoy long walks by the beach, this is a place for you. No effort is spared, and everything seems to be very effortless and skilfully done.

Have just returned from a fantastic 8 nights staying at the Villa Kusum. The location is superb on a beautiful quiet stretch of beach, away from the hustle of Hikkaduwa but only a 5 min tuk tuk ride or 15 min walk along the sand if you want to reach livlier areas.

The Villa has it's own pool and only 4 guest rooms so you get the best service with your own sunbeds and lovely little touches like wake-up tea to your room in the morning, tea and cake in the afternon and a sunset cocktail each day. We stayed in the Colonial suite, a really stunning room with a sea view that was such a pleasure to wake to each day.

The staff are fantastic, always such a high level of service but at the same time you feel like part of the family. The Villa has an amazing chef who prepared some of the most memorable meals.

I would particularly recommend staying over New Years when the Villa laid on a sumptuous 8 course New Years eve dinner followed by champagne and fireworks on the beach. On New Years day there was a champagne breakfast, high tea in the afternoon, a boat trip around a nearby lagoon and another fabulous dinner where traditional dancers entertained whilst we were eating.

The Villa is a wonderfully romantic and relaxing place to stay but you are close enough to Hikkaduwa for bars, other restaurants, shops, surfing etc. I would love it to stay a secret but I can't recommend it highly enough. Treat yourself!

From the moment we stepped inside Villa Kusum we were very impressed with how beautiful and luxurious the place was, the staff were so helpful and friendly and made you feel more than welcome. We stayed in the Ceylon Suite which was to the rear of the property overlooking the beach, the room was clean and beautifully furnished, it even had a jacuzzi bath in the bathroom. There is no mini bar or TV though so if you wanted to have a quiet night in come prepared. You could occasionally hear the traffic from the main road outside so bear this in mind when choosing your room as they do have 2 on the front which I can imagine are quite noisey at times. After exploring Hikkaduwa we came to the conclusion that Villa Kusum was situated at the nicer end of the bay and provided you with a little bit more privacy away from the beach sellers etc but only a 5-10 minute walk to reach the local bars/restaurants in the evening. We had 2 meals at Villa Kusum, both were a set menu as it was over New Year, the food was very good and of a much higher standard that you'd find outside although it was more expensive. They are licensed to sell alcohol too but it is of a limited choice. You also need to pay by cash as they don't have the facility to accept credit cards however there are a handful of banks with ATM's in Hikkaduwa town about a 10 min Tuk Tuk drive away. Overall if you are looking for a luxury guesthouse with a personal touch and you don't mind paying a bit extra then this is the place for you. It's definately one of the nicest places we've stayed in Sri Lanka and somewhere that we would come back to.

Beautiful colonial house just at the beach with a beautiful garden and swimmingpool.
The rooms are large and stylish furnished with excelent bathroom.
You can see that taking care of the guests is priority.
The food is special, thanks to the (top)cook.
The house is clean and quiet.
Walking beside the sea it is 10 min. walking to the village.
The owners do arrange the hire of a taxi, tuc tuc and advice for trips.
It was a real pleasure to be in this hotel.

Myself and 7 of of my friends have just returned from a 4 day break in Sri Lanka and we had the utmost pleasure of staying at Villa Kasum.

Thanks to other reviews on Trip Advisor we decided to give this private villa a go rather than go for better known hotels in Galle and Bentota and were absolutely delighted with our decision.

Rather than making an impersonal booking, we in fact exchanged quite a number of emails with the owner Lammert who was very keen to understand our needs and wants for our stay. As a result of these emails we were able to strike somewhat of a bargain which meant we received an overall discount on the rooms (as we were out of season and booking the whole villa). He also arranged all of our transfers to and from the airport in Colombo. As noted in a previous review, you have to make a transfer of the rates upfront to a SL account and again following that review, this turned out to be absolutely fine.

The Villa itself is a lovely mix of modern chic (with some trendy bathrooms and touches) and old colonial style. The bonus is however the characteristic garden and fantastic beach which acts like an extension of the villa itself. Tea, breakfast and dinner all take place in the garden which is set up with an array of tables and comfy chairs around the pool. If you prefer the beach, however, the villa staff will quickly arrange sun lounges / umbrella for your use.

The staff were fantastic and always seemed keen to assist us and make us feel at home. As stated on the website, there is morning tea, breakfast, afternoon tea and cake and sundowner cocktails included in the rate! These came as a matter of course and we never had to request and each of these was done with just the right amount of ceremony to make you feel really quite sploit. The staff stayed up until we had gone to bed and were always on hand for drinks, towels etc.

We were there in low season and had the beach for ourselves. On some investigation, however, we concluded that we were far enough away from the main hotels that we thought it would normally be peaceful even in high season. The positioning of the Villa was perfect being a short walk or tuk tuk ride to central Hikkaduwa and only a 40 min journey to Galle. We also managed to slip in a trip to the turtle sanctuary and there was plenty others adventures we could have gone on had we had more time. The hotel arranged all of these trips for us and in fact we were inspired by their suggestions in the hotel information pack.

As a final note, and mirroring that of the other reviews, the jewel in the crown is their chief Dinesh who cannot hid his enthusiam for his trade. We had the joy of having two 'fine french dining' dinners which were beautifully set up next to the beach. The food was lovely but it was no doubt his joy in cooking and talking with us which provided the perfect garnish. We requested a Sri Lankan breakfast and lunch and he took it upon himself to serve a vast variety of dishes to tempt us. You are in no way bound to eat at the hotel and they suggest elsewhere but you really really would be missing out if you didnt.

Oh one final note is that we noted that the costs of drinks and snacks in Villa was lower than the other 'tourist' places around.

Suffice to say we have all been converted and my Mum and Dad are about to book up for next year too. Go on and treat yourselves to this little treasure.
