“Enjoyable Holiday”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

Excellent rooms very clean and well furnished with well stocked mini bar turn down service etc
Veiws from the balcony amazing for a beer at sunset
The staff are lovely and friendly all the time always a smile and a nice greeting.
Food at breakfast very good with plenty of choice, the usual buffet + egg station, hoppers & waffles
Beach very nice to the right of the hotel but a bit rocky to the left which would benefit clearing as its difficult to walk on without shoes
Pool beautiful & the sun bed boys brilliant never any fighting over a lounger.
Did eat in the Crab which was excellent but by local standards expensive but well worth at least one try doing your stay, plenty of choices for places to dine both on the beach & Galle Road
All in all a wonderful holiday and hope one day to return

Room Tip: Fouth floor for best veiws

I'm still marking this very good, but it only just squeaks in. Lovely comfy bed, great view over the ocean and everything clean and runs well. I found the beach very nice, there is under palm tree beds to laze on out of the sun and enough beach and other areas around the grounds if you want to catch some rays. The small bay that you walk out to from the hotel felt safe to swim in and in fact you could swim all the way out to the reef.

The bathrooms are becoming a bit dated and the half board food was plentiful, and varied, but lacked any real panache, I wasn't blown away by it the way I was at Lighthouse Galle.

Some small gripes I had which might just be something management might consider are.

Turning down the beds and leaving a printed note saying "have a nice sleep." I expect to have a nice sleep, but what would be nice and usual in this price range hotel would be a little chocolate or mint on the bed! Yes silly but its these things that make a difference. And the note felt a bit insulting and cheap.

The uniforms of the lower management were hideous, turquoise in some sort of man made imitation satin with black shiny pants. They looked like they were some sort of gangsters about to go out night clubbing in tacky bars. Surely John Keels has some design consultants that can do better than this? They just made the place look cheap.

Lastly and more serious. I was told the hotel was renovated and the balcony's added. You open a glass door onto a small catwalk that is open to both the floor below and above, then opens onto the balcony. The problem with this is when there are people above or below you that are partying on their balcony, the noise seems to be amplified down into your room. One night it was loud enough with shouts and screams and music that I had to use ear plugs to sleep.

The hotel Receptionist Lilly from Kandy and as sweet as Candy was extremely helpful and got us our sim card and loaded the credits for us, sent us a anniversay cake to our room, she was always smiling and very helpful, I would say overall this hotel works very hard to keep every one happy,You can use the hotel taxi which we did not buut were recommended by another Trip Ad member to contact ajith-tuktuk@info. or call him on 0094716482768 or when there call 0716482768 has purpel tuk tuk very sincere and very reasonable always to please but do not let your heart rule your head, these people are trying to make a living, ajith has a younger brother that he supports and a mother since they lost their father to a illness.

This seemed to be one of the nicer hotels in Hikkaduwa. Our room had a large balcony with padded lounge bench, two chairs and a table. The balcony was a great place to enjoy the sunset and chill with a book.

Our room had an bedlike couch which could be used as a third bed if traveling in a group of 3. Room was clean and service people were friendly. Reading lights above each bed.

Breakfast was standard English and Indian/Sri Lankan dishes. But no egg hoppers - a Sri Lankan breakfast specialty. Fresh coconut water always a bonus for re-hydration.

Pool area was spacious with lots of lounge chairs spread out across the grass. No fighting here for a chair. Towels and cushions for the chairs are provided. I deduct one point for no lounging on the beach. The beach area was very thin and rocky; not a great place for swimming. You needed to walk for about 15 minutes to get to the nice sandy beach area where people were swimming and surfing.

I did notice that the hotel built grass huts for private dinners on the beach. That would be a nice treat if traveling as a couple.

This was the first major hotel in hikkaduwa and you can really tell. Whilst the location and grounds are rather nice the hotel itself is dated and the rooms need a major overhaul.
As others have mentioned the rooms are damp, poorly ventilated and noisy. The views are superb but for the price they are not up to standard.
Food at the breakfast and dinner buffets is also really very average. We resorted to eating in the crab restaurant (part if the hotel) where the seafood was excellent but expensive for this part of Sri Lanka.
Service was superb as always in Sri Lanka and if you are really struggling to find accommodation last minute this is a solid plan b.

Chaaya Tranz was the best all round hotel of our entire trip to Sri Lanka. The rooms were modern and spacious, the location superb and the food and service were first class. The balcony was excellent with stunning views and a visiting Chipmunk like squirrel who kept us amused by it’s barking and antics.
The air conditioning was very quiet and efficient and the take away breakfasts provided on two occasions were enormous.
We were at the Chaaya Tranz for four nights and can recommend it as the perfect place to end a visit to this beautiful island.
Be sure to see the Turtle Sanctuary and go Whale Watching whilst you are there

It was a family trip with about 16 of us and we stayed 2 nights at the hotel - not being sure of what to expect as it was a refurb of an exisitng hotel under new management. I have to say that it has been done very well, and the rooms are amazing, with lovely balcony/courtyard spaces. Great view. We had booked on for half board - which gave us the buffet b'fast and dinner...fabulous selection of food - some a little overly fancy with salads in shot glasses etc - but whatever! it was great!
There are 3 sea turtles which frequent its coastline, so you can swin with these magnificent creatures and feed the sea-weed (be careful coz there are hawkers trying to sell you sea weed so don't get bullied to pay more than a Rs.100-150) or you can find your own sea weed...or just go swimming with them!
Again it is a tourist trap - so be aware of boat rides for snorkelling etc - we had agreed a price for a ride and on returning they tried to charge us extra, and also asked for a tip! Be firm in your negotiations.
There is also a good massage parlour just opposite the hotel!
You also need to check before hand if the hotel does any card promotions - otherwise they never tell you!
