“Thought provoking”

Tsunami Honganji Vihara

The statue is right by the main road and worth a stop to have a look though there isn't much to see but the statue. It is very thought provoking though and made me stop and think about the lives lost and terrible hardships faced by the local people at that time.

Facing the sea The Buddha is calm and protective reinforcing the trust of the people. Interesting to see how well the country has accepted the 2004 disaster and moved on positively.

... but not a must - if you go to the tsunami photo museum from direction hikkaduwa you will pass by anyway, so you can also stop for a couple of minutes

Nothing that remarkable about a large Buddha, a memorial and a collection of photos, but what it represents is quite harrowing. We asked the tuk tuk driver to take us and we went to all the sites. It also led to an interesting chat with the driver who was there at the time

This was built by the Japanese in remembrance of the tsunami that killed so many Sri Lankan people. Close to the turtle hatchery and there is also the Tsunami memorial in remembrance of the train where 1000 people lost their lives.
