“A little corner of paradise”
Reviewed September 27, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

My daughter chose this villa after reading the great reviews on Trip Advisor. We were booked in for two weeks in September - my daughter, her two children, my husband and I. Unfortunately two days before we left Cindy was taken ill and was not allowed to fly. In the end my husband and I went on our own. We were not sure if two weeks on our own in a villa would be a little too long. We had reckoned without Villa Gallindawatta (Sri Lankan name meaning stone well garden). As soon as we arrived we were taken aback by the absolute beauty of the place. Three air conditioned bedrooms with their own en-suite, a large comfortable dining, sitting room, gardens that were immaculately cared for by Asoka and Lalith - the two resident gardeners, plus Asela our resident chef and Asintha who did everything from prepare vegetables, wait on us, keep the villa immaculate and generally made our stay very special. The gardens look out over a paddy field complete with water buffalo and a band of peacocks. The infinity pool with its own pavilion was our daily haven. From there we saw lizards, monkeys, chipmunks, mongoose, so many amazing birds we did not feel we had to go anywhere - nature had come to us. We did go out - although not as much as we would have done with our daughter as Steve and I have spent some time in Sri Lanka and were initially coming to show it to our girls. There is the amazing Hikkaduwa beach which is miles and miles of golden sand with the appropriate number of shops and restaurants. That is about 10 minutes (dusty) walk away - or you can always ask Asela to organise a Tuc Tuc. You are also close to a Turtle Hatchery, the photo museum to the Tsunami - and many other attractions from moonstone mines to cinnamon plantations etc. If you want to go anywhere in Sri Lanka the staff are happy to organise it - and prices are of course very reasonable. Whilst there we took a taxi to Colombo for the day and visited our favourite Paradise Island shop and the adjacent Galley Café - a visit to these two places is an absolute must for all our visits to Sri Lanka!! We also took a Tuc Tuc to Galle (half an hour away) for the day on a couple of occasions- a wonderful colonial town with shops and restaurants to suit all tastes. We also had dresses and shirts made up by Asha - a lovely tailor in Hikkaduwa - who charged £3-£5 for hand made tops, dresses etc!
Of course, our holiday was really made by staying in such a beautiful villa. We spent lazy days by the pool reading, painting and writing. The best meals we ate were served by the staff at the villa - from a seafood barbecue by the pool to simple but wonderful curries in the villa.
If you are looking for a family holiday with a difference - one you will remember forever - or just to chill out in paradise - this place does tick all the boxes. We were so pleased with the villa we have told Cindy - who had to miss out because of illness - we will be back there with her like a shot as soon as she is able to!

“Amazing place, great service, lovely time”
Reviewed March 30, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

We spent a week with our baby Maxime of 6 months and our stay was just perfect!
the villa is very nice, located in a lovely garden very well maintained, with flowers, birds, monkeys. we loved spending time and our breakfast at the pool, with an amazing view over the paddy field and grazing buffalo. Furniture are nice, wooden, antiques, but easy, not too posh. The bed was very comfortable, we loved our bathroom with a part of it being actually outdoor (but close and secured) and plants, amazing feeling.
it is in a very quiet area, but only 15mn walk from the beach, quiet road as well we used with the baby stroller! the best thing is you have access to Roman beach hotel, with a superb pool overlooking the sea, sunbeds, and heer as well a great service.

but what made the best difference was the service provided by Ashita and Anita at the villa; one is the cook and also a tuk tuk driver, cooking such delicious local meals, with fresh food that we had all our dinners at home, much better than average restaurants. he also drove us to Galle twice, fixing the stroller on the roof, great feeling, and helped us with groceries any time we needed. Ashita was helping for cleaning, service and is also very nice and gentle. Both really helped us with the baby, looking after him when we wanted to enjoy our breakfast or dinner, with very good care and lovely attention.
We warmly recommend the place, the people and will come back as soon as possible because our holidays were perfect thanks to this villa and the service.

“Simply perfect”
Reviewed February 22, 2015 for a stay in February 2015

We stayed in the villa for 10 nights with our three children. The villa is probably the most beautiful place we have ever stayed in, the garden is simply amazing, tranquil yet full of wildlife. We were in awe watching the monkeys play in the trees and seeing the massive lizards, peacocks and tropical birds.
The staff are fantastic, particularly Asela and Asitha. They made the stay truly special as nothing was too much trouble. I can not thank Asela and Asitha enough. They both went above and beyond to make our holiday perfect, even down to arranging balloons and a birthday cake for our middle daughter who turned 6 during our stay.
Asela's Sri Lankan food is fantastic, in fact we often felt disappointed eating out as the restaurants paled in comparison, his curries and all the sides were probably the best we have ever tasted.
Staying at the Villa Gallindawatta is little bit of luxury...all the perks of the hotel, but in your own private villa, perfect! We all feel absolutely gutted that our holiday ended and our only regret is we didn't stay for longer. Thank you so much and we hope to be back very soon.

“Serene and amazing”
Reviewed January 29, 2015 for a stay in December 2014

So grateful for the privilege of staying at this villa! It's provided so much pleasant memories for our group of 6.

Our arrival was greeted by fireflies and the friendly team. The villa is surrounded by a well maintained garden which was a treat to the eyes. We loved to swim at the pool that overlooks a paddy field with storks and buffaloes. Beach is only 15 minutes away where we'd played hours of cricket and people-watched.

The house was full of tasteful art and interior along with bathrooms that are cleaned regularly. The cooks had prepared such delicious food we preferred to have most of our meals at the villa instead of eating out. There were also plenty of entertainment options - TV with HDMI ports, WiFi, players. Overall, it was an amazing experience to stay here.

We stayed for four nights and enjoyed swimming and relaxing at the pool which is surrounded by beautiful gardens and greenery. We felt pampered with Asela the chef and the other guys providing terrific meals and general service as well as giving us some good fun and competition with cricket. Beach itself apparently doesn't get good until November so this is worth keeping in mind. We were late sept / early Oct and beach not great for swimming, surfing and not much sand for walking, cricket etc

“Tranquil and oh so relaxing ...”
Reviewed September 3, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We had a wonderful couple of weeks (last 2 weeks of August) at Stone Well Garden Villa and the new team of staff (ranging from a gardener to the chef, Asela) really did a fabulous job in making our stay very comfortable. It was wonderful having our breakfasts and dinners cooked and served to us - we recommend the Sri Lankan Omelette for breakfast and curry for dinner, and our rooms and bathrooms were cleaned on a daily basis. The air conditioning in the bedrooms was a welcome relief, even though it was the end of the monsoon season and it rained during our first week each evening (with thunder), it was still hot when the sun shone from about 9.30am until 4pm. We felt truly relaxed throughout our whole stay and the free wildlife show in the grounds and beyond was wonderful - monkeys, lizards, snakes, caterpillars, a chipmunk-type animal, peacocks, storks and water buffalo. Our teenage daughter enjoyed the peace and tranquility (whilst waiting for her GCSE results) and our nine year old son spent most of the time messing around in the pool. We talked with Asela about the day trips that we wanted to do and he arranged for a taxi driver to transport us around for a much more reasonable price than the local tour operators. We went on a local day tour, taking in the turtle hatchery, blue lagoon, Cinnamon Island, the Tsunami Photo Museum (take some tissues or a hankie!), Mask Museum and the Herbs and Spices Garden. We also went on a safari to Udawalawe - a fantastic experience - and Asela packed up some breakfast sandwiches to take because of the very early start. We will definitely be returning to Sri Lanka and we know where we'll be staying ... it was absolutely perfect in every way.
