If you’re lusting after a decent flat white or latte in Sri Lanka, forget it; they simply don’t exist. The coffee tastes uniformly filthy due to the fact that fresh milk is a rare commodity. If a cafe in Sri Lanka insists they use fresh milk, in 99% of cases all they mean is they use long-life milk, not powdered.
After 3 weeks of western food deprivation for our kids (they could only eat so many ‘House Special Club Sandwiches’ before boredom set in) and coffee deprivation for me, we were really happy to find Nordic House. I was too traumatised by experiences elsewhere to risk ordering a ‘real’ coffee, but their iced coffee was a real treat. The burgers were fat and luscious and the fries were freshly made and crisp. Smiles all-round!
The burgers here may not be super-brilliant if you’re comparing them to a gourmet burger purchased in Sydney or New York, but why would you do that? It’s Sri Lanka and, here, they’re a little chunk of heaven.
Aside from that, the staff girls are adorable, and the premises were spotlessly clean.
If you’re becoming a little tired of the local cuisine and feel like a western cafe-style food fix, this is the place to go in Hikkaduwa.
