this is a very small place... and the highlight is you get to hold the just born ...

found the sad story narrated by the caretaker a bit carried away ... he will ask donation for the temporary shed which is broken and the way he is struggling to maintain the place ...

We all looked this - and felt it deserved a good review for all the excellent voluntary work it does. Pretty standard tour (small or large groups) with good english speaking guides. A baby turtle hatched in front of our eyes, and I was given it to hold - precious!

Good to see the turtles up close and the children we saw there really seemed to enjoy it. The guides didn't really seem that interested in answering our questions and after the few tanks there's nothing else to see. If its on your way to somewhere then stop, if not don't worry you can see them on the beach in Hikkaduwa.

This is a very small venue, but turtles are big news in this part of the world, not just as a tourist attraction but also as poachers game and as a delicacy for the numerous local fish eagles.
Five of the world's 7 turtle species visit SriLanka, and their breeding sites are seriously under threat.

We weren't convinced that a small hatchery like this can make much difference in the overall scheme of things, but they are taking big strides in education and awareness. Our kids are 3 & 6, and they loved it... so I suppose that's a start. Just don't be tempted to release any of the baby turtles back to the wild during daylight hours - the fish eagles are on constant standby.

We didn't much like the pressure to "donate", but we understand the need for funding.

Keep up the good work
