“Amazing Hotel, Lovely Hotel and People”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

I have recently arrived back from a 2 week stay at the Sunbeach Hotel and what an amazing holiday it turned out to be. I wanted to go away somewhere hot and the prospect of spending my 30th Birthday in cold England was depressing to say the least. The hotel was recommended to me by a family member who know the people currently running the place, John & Dasha. I had done a fair amount of research on places to stay and initially was thinking of staying at a chain hotel with an all inclusive deal, I am so happy that we decided to stay here.

We opted to stay in one of the more expensive rooms which had air conditioning and a balcony looking onto the beach although there were cheaper rooms available. The room was modern, comfortable and very clean with bedding and fresh clean towels provided every other day. Included in the price was delicious breakfast on a daily basis which served tea/coffee, fresh fruit juice or platter, 2 eggs cooked any way you liked, yoghurt with honey & toast. The hotel also provided lunch and dinner which, was always very tasty but you could eat at other places if you were on a tighter budget. All the staff were very friendly and always happy to have a chat. Special mention goes to Jiantha who always placed beautiful flowers on the bed when he had been in to clean, this was always very well received by me and placed a smile on my face.

The hotel location is perfect, situated right on the beach front so you did have to go far if you wanted to swim or sunbath. I have to admit, Sunbeach was by far the nicest and most modern looking out of all the other hotels/guest house along the beach. The area is very popular with surfers so most of the time we opted to walk down the beach (5 mins or less) to an area with less surfers to swim. The beaches were truly stunning with some of the best sunsets I have ever seen. The sea was really warm and perfect place to cool down. Local people were always very friendly and you would often see them walking on the beach offering to sell you things but if you weren’t interested, saying no would always suffice and we never felt pestered or hassled.
The bar right next door to the hotel put on beach party on Wednesday's and the music is fairly loud, however we don't travel without ear plugs so it didn't bother us too. The staff did a good job to warn us before hand so it wasn't an unexpected shock.

The main road (although fairly crazy with traffic and bus drives being the king of the road) there were plenty of restaurants, shops selling clothing, batiks, sarongs, jewellery and tours. Food was very nice and fairly cheap, I would recommend having a traditional Sri Lankan curry.

We did go on several tours, the Lagoon tour (which was a 2 hour boat ride) which, also included a visit to the spice garden, turtle sanctuary and moon-stone mine. We also did a waterfall tour which took about and hour and a half by tuk tuk, a day trip to Galle with a stop off at the Peace Pagoda. On the final day day we went whale watching and although the whale watching was an amazing experience, the start was very early and I couldn't help but feel a little sad when a load of boats were chasing them to get a good sighting. Despite this, it was still wonderful to see blue whales. The weather was always warm and temperatures In the high 20's everyday. Although It did rain and was cloudy for a few days, it was still really nice and still managed to spend a fair few days lazying about in the sun.

Overall I/we had a fantastic holiday, and I would 100% recommend staying at Sunbeach Hotel. The overall atmosphere was very relaxed and chilled and I would definitely stay here again. Thanks you to John, Dasha, Jiantha, Vinod and guy who served us breakfast (sorry I forget your name) for making our holiday so amazing.

I stayed at Sunbeach Hotel with my husband and adult daughter for 3 days and 2 nights. The hotel was a complete surprise. The accommodation charges were very reasonable and the hotel was lovely, having been recently renovated. It is the most attractive hotel on the strip with a shady and relaxing garden. On the seashore they have beach lounges, with umbrellas and towels supplied, with the best of all views and extraordinary sunsets. There are cheaper rooms on the ground floor but we had booked first floor accommodation with great sea views. The rooms had been tastefully decorated and the beds were comfortable and, most of all, had good quality, and clean, sheets. The bathrooms were a decent size and have been modernised. The food was excellent and the staff were attentive and cheerful. The Australian couple managing the hotel,John and Dasha, were completely charming and were on hand whenever they were needed for practical assistance or advice. They knew the area well and were able to suggest great things to do and places to shop! They also added that special something like arranging fireworks for my birthday which was a real treat. All in all a great place to stay if in Hikkaduwa!

Room Tip: Upstairs suites with sea view are well worth paying a little extra for!

Note that we did not stay at this hotel and only dropped in for dinner. We were looking for a meal outside our hotel and walked down the road in search of a restaurant. Most restaurants in Hikkaduwa are part of hotels so you have to browse menus and see what you like.

We were enticed by SunBeach's gourmet sounding menu. They add a little twist to Sri Lankan food. Outside seating right on the sand looking at the ocean was a nice way to spend dinner too. We had the best Deviled Shrimp here out of the 5 or so we tried through out our vacation. It was a perfect level of spice and sweet.

We took a sneak peek at rooms and they looked nice and clean. Walked by the next day on the beach; the place looks very inviting with orange umbrellas and unweathered beach lounge chairs. Beach location is prime on the large sandy strip. If I return to Hikkaduwa, I would put this top of my list for choices to stay.

We enjoyed four nights at sunbeach. And found that it is the best looking place on the beach. The surroundings are beautiful with a sense of small details as towel on sun beds, nice garden with chairs and and nice decor/lamps/pictures in the hallway. The staff is also friendly and the Australian couple that manage the place are often around to answer questions.

The rooms are very small and quite worn down and you almost shower on top of the toilet hence the bathroom is also small and it's impossible to avoid that the bathroom floor is soaking wet afterwards :( I could write in details about the shortcomings of the room eg broken holder for the shower thing , but the bed sheets/towels were clean and it did not smell mouldy. We had to upgrade to ac to avoid it though.

The standard rooms (45/55$) are placed on both sides in a long hall way and there are open squares in the top of the rooms. That means you can hear what's going on outside in the hallway and they can perhaps hear you.... Traveling as a couple you might consider that and you don't sleep in.

We will recommend this place and not hesitate to come back, though stay in a room with seaview and more space.

Idea for The managers: Put up an extra row of sunbeds near the sea?

We just came back from Hikkaduwa staying 4 nights in Sunbeach. Dasha and John treated us as family as soon as we arrived from a long trip. We booked a room in the top floor which was much more than we expected! The lines of the room are simple but modern with good AC. Everything clear and good quality. Chairs and table to watch the waves and sunsets from the balcony. Flowers after changing the linen. The food is VERY good. Starting from the breakfast (good coffee, buffalo yoghurt with honey, fruit plate with passion fruit sauce on the side, toast with butter and homemade marmalade, eggs any style). Then the menu for lunch and dinner was delicious, Srilankan food for a Western taste. The hotel is one the beach so you can see everything that happens there, specially the good surf as the surf spot is just in front! You have many options of bars and beach restaurants just beside. At the sun goes down music is turned on and you can have a beer or good drinks with the best sunset in front.
The guys that work in the bar, restaurant and hotel are also very nice, helpful and friendly.
It is quite close to Galle and you can hire a motorbike (watch the police that might stop you asking for drivers license). If not you can thake a tuktuk-taxi for less than US$20.
All in all, the hotel has an excellent price for the quality and fun.

Took the family here to allow teenage boys to hang on the beach with the surf crowd at New Year and expected a hippie experience. What we got was way better. Sunbeach is a haven of quality and high standards on the cool but at times average strip of Hikkaduwa. The manager and the owners are service oriented folk who have created an incredibly relaxed and stylish refuge right in the middle of the action. Even an old time investment banker would have let his hair down if he'd had some.
Go for the rooms with AC overlooking the beach rather than the budget ones if you can. Eat the food, it is excellent and try to be there for New year - the firework display is to die for!
