II stayed at the Curry Bowl several years running before the tsunami. It was a great place to stay; right by the beach, friendly staff, reasonable prices and great food. I thought the tsunami had been particularly bad on that part of the coast, and that this charming hotel must have been swept away; but I saw someone else's review from 2010, and I am so pleased it is still going. They may have had to do extensive repairs, but it was lovely then and is probably nicer now, so I would recommend it to anyone except those who insist on soulless 'international'' standards.

We decided to take a risk and stay at curry bowl, despite not being able to find any reviews on this place. But the name itself sounding promising. We had to call to make a booking which was quite interesting with the language barrier, as they have no email or website. I think the Manager liked it this way, and maybe added to the charm of this small guesthouse. Its location is towards the northern end of hikkaduwa, on the beach side, and only 10-15 min leisurely walk from the swimming/surf beach (the beach area behind Curry Bowl is rocky and low, not for swimming). Coming off the crazy noisy galle rd, it was like stepping into an oasis. Perfectly trimmed and green manicured lawn and garden, a traditional sri lankan style guesthouse, despite the original building being almost 200 years old, it seemed quite modern and minimalist - lot of white walls and smooth cement. The rooms were clean and simple. Non a/c rooms were about 1500-1800, and we opted to pay a bit more for an a/c room which was around 2700rupees - still an absolute bargain! No tv, simple shower and toilet, fan, mosquito net and two king single beds put together. Despite the price being so cheap, the overall presentation well exceeded our expectations and surpassed other places we had stayed in that was triple the price. The manager was a lovely little old guy, who'd been there since he was 17, and took pride in his guesthouse. The couple of nights we ate in for dinner, he would serve us and talk to us about the tsunami and his time, in his best english. The food was delicious, the curry and rice and other dishes, were all a treat. We couldn't believe we were the only people having dinner there, it all seemed like we were in on hikkaduwa's best kept secret. The only downside to our stay at Curry Bowl, was that we had an ant situation on the first night, these ants seemed determined to get on our bed, but this was sorted out the next day with some insect spray. Great Sri Lankan food, no tacky touristy vibe, peace and quiet, a lovely place to come home to. If you are looking for a place to get away from the masses of the "tourist scene that is Hikkaduwa", then this is your place.
