“The best holiday ever!!!”
Reviewed March 6, 2010

we travelled with friends for a wedding, our friends found this hotel through trip advisor and we read the reviews before we went and was very impressed. But they did not do this beatiful location justice no matter how well it was rated!!

Travelling from Columbo for four hours, so we were desperate to get to the hotel and when we arrived we were greated by Cyril (lovely man) and the two owners Dale and Tanya. They were so warm and friendly and got us settled into our rooms within a matter of minutes.

The rooms are stunning, all indivudully decorated and named, we were in Kingfisher, which is the family room. It was spacious and very comfortable with excellent air con.

Dale, Tanya and the excellent staff couldnt have been more helpful and I only wish I could take Dale with me on all my holidays as there was nothing that he could not sort or arrange. He was so knowledgable and offered sound advice when we wanted to go out and about as to where to go and what time. He arranged a boat trip in the first couple of days and recommended an early start to avoid large tours and he was spot on and we had a brilliant time on the bost. The trip consisted of 3 tuk tuk's picking us up at 7am (Ulpul tours, we used these guys all the time and they were so helpful and accommodating) the river trip, mask factory, Tsunami museum, peace pagoda etc were amazing.

The food at the hotel is very good and varied and the chef is willing to cook traditional Sri Lankan food on request with a bit of notice, i would recommend the Sri Lankan curry and rice or Devilled chicken/Prawns.

The atmosphere and staff at the hotel is very relaxed but attentive, but not overlly so. I cannot praise the staff enough, they are friendly and always smiling.

The rooms are cleaned every day to a high standard.

And finally!! Dale and Tanya, what can i say, good company, always helpful, they have created a beatiful hotel in an idylic location, we will be going back for definite.

Thankyou so much for such an enjoyable time.

There are many regular guests here, and it's easy to see why. Dale & Tanya do everything they can to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
Rooms are good, dinner is excellent, and the fruit platter at breakfast is historic. It would be worth eating here, even if you're not a resident guest.
Dale has arranged a set price for the tuk-tuk ride to the beach (LKR250), and can arrange trips and excursions fo ryou. we did the river trip, which was excellent, especially as we could choose what we did and didn't want to see.
This is a hidden jewel, that's not so hidden anymore.

My boyfriend and I arrived after staying in Bentota for four nights. When we arrived I received a lovely big hug off Tanya and made to feel very much at home. Our room was beautiful and nothing was too much trouble. We stayed for nine nights in total and will definitely return. The staff were wonderful particulary Cyril one of the waiters, always smiling, it was my birthday when I was over there and Cyril bought in a bunch of hand picked flowers from his garden! Bless him! The Asian Jewel also made me a lovely birthday cake and Tanya bought sparklers out for everyone, I was made to feel very special! Thank you again to everyone who was there!
We met some lovely people also staying at the hotel, (Gill, Mister Tom and Dale's Mum Anne!) who we enjoyed a drink with (or few!) in the evenings! Hope to see you all again!
In the evenings we found there was always enough to do; either drinks with other guests or hitting Hikkadewa's night life, or a quiet night in with a DVD. It really does feel so homely we would just go and sit downstairs and have a drink and a chat with Tanya or other guests, it was great.
The pool was always immaculately clean, often having the pool to ourselves which was lovely. Their Tuk Tuk driver was brilliant too, very reliable and helpful on sight seeing/ snorkelling trips. The food there is also very good with the Sri Lankan curry being excellent ,we ordered it twice over our stay.
Overall it was our first visit to Sri Lanka and we have fallen in love with the country and the people. The Asian Jewel was the icing on the cake!

My wife and stayed for eight nights and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food was excellent and very varied, catering for a European palate as well as for those who wanted a more authentic Sri Lankan meal - the curry was excellent. The rooms are very new and well appointed - ours was double aspect over the pool and the lagoon at the back. Although a bit isolated it was a simple matter to take a tuk-tuk into the beach area and Anura, a regular driver with the hotel, was a helpful and polite young man. The staff were very professional, keen to learn and eager to please. Owners Dale and Tanya were always ready with advice when needed.
The train into Galle is an experience well worth chancing but watch out for a plausible gentleman called Cyril at the station. He will take you under his wing, explain that Galle Fort is closed for some reason and encourage you to take a short tour until it opens - not with any old tuk-tuk driver tho, one who is 'licensed'. This, of course, is his mate who will rack up the kilometres and then try to take you for about 4500 rupees (he has a very slick way of 'accidentally' miscalculating the total by about 1000 in his favour). In fact his tour was pretty good and covered all the essentials but it is really annoying to feel ripped off and not realise that Cyril was in on it until we got back to the hotel! You live and learn.
The Asian Jewel is very quiet of an evening and there is not much to do after dinner but if you are after a quiet retreat and the chance to recharge your batteries, this is the place to do it.

We stayed at Asian Jewel with our two boys 16 and 10, for 6 days in the beginning of Jan 2010. This was our first trip to Sri Lanka and to Hikkaduwa. I trusted other reviews on this site and the trust was not misplaced. There is enough already said by others in terms of how wonderful this place is. We all had a great time.

So I will focus on a couple of things that may matter to other users of this site. We are vegetarians (except my elder son) and my wife was originally concerned about food we would get in Sri Lanka and at this hotel. But this was actually no problem at all. We love continental food and slight continental slant was just what we needed. The Sri Lankan curry was equally well made and we ended up ordering it for dinner on two consecutive nights. The quality of preparation was so good that we ate out only once (at the beach) and we regretted even that excursion.

Dale and Tanya have a reasonable collection of DVDs as well as books that we ended up using in addition to our own books.

My younger son and I ended up taking a canoe trip in the lake that is next to the hotel. The boat was available for rent at a neighboring hotel at a very reasonable rate. Water is, of course, very flat.

A fabulous vacation overall. And thanks to Dale and Tanya for creating this wonderful place.

This is the second time we have stayed at the the Asian Jewel. We alsolutely adore this small luxury hotel and stayed for 2 weeks over the New Year. Since our last stay, the hotel has still maintained it's standards and position and it is now advisable to book well in advance due to it's popularity. We stayed in the 'Lady Rose' room and we more than happy with the accomodation. For New Year, one of us went into town with Tayna to buy Sri Lanka fireworks which we let off at the stroke of midnight, one of the fireworks looked like a rocket launcher and blew a hole in tree canopy in the garden (sorry Tanya & Dale I hope it grows back!).

The pool and gardens are meticulously maintained and the food was the usual 100% standard, so much so that we will make a seperate entry for the restaurant .

Tayna makes her own soaps and comestics for the hotel and we purchased some body cream from her, it was some of the best cream we have ever purchased.

The staff are so friendly and eager to make your stay perfect, its just a pity we had to leave..............

We travelled to Hikkaduwa for my Brother's wedding in February 2009 spending a week at Aditya for the wedding and a week at the Asian Jewel. It was a great experience all round.

We spent the second week on our own at the Asian Jewel, moving closer to Hikkaduwa for the surf. The hotel is set back with views of the lake which were absolutely stunning. Dale, Tanya and all of the staff could not have been more helpful, even lending me a bike to check the surf ! Food and drink are good value-the fruit platter is a great start to the day. Dale and Tanya take pride in offering good quality food with great service and friendly hospitality. Our room overlooked the lake with a balcony, it was very peaceful.

You are close enough to get to the hustle and bustle of Hikkaduwa but far enough away to relax. There is a nice pool with sun-beds and service always at hand. We used to walk down the hill into the town and enjoy the experience of meeting local people and taking the whole place in. Dale and Tanya also have good links with local taxi and tuk-tuk drivers who always arrived very promptly. The nights are good fun, there is a friendly vibe, you can have your own space for a meal or meet other people.

Would we return ? Absolutely. There is a Western flavor to the food and hospitality - you feel relaxed the minute that you arrive.
