We're both very well travelled and are not easily impressed when it comes to hotels. However, the Asian Jewel was simply heavenly in every way. Everything about our three night stay there was just fabulous. The room was beautiful (we were in Jasmine which had a 4 poster bed) and spotlessly clean; the food was yummy; the service was fantastic (Cyril deserves special thanks here, as does Upal the tuk tuk driver).

The attention to little details also set the Asian Jewel apart from pretty much all the other hotels we've ever stayed in: the fresh flowers put on the bed every day; the home-made smellies; and the chef even cooked us food that wasn't on the menu (twice). All in all it was just wonderful.

Tanya was great fun (although we both left the hotel with hangovers) and very knowledgeable about Sri Lanka. She recommended accommodation/contacts for us in a couple of other towns and her suggestions, like everything else about our stay here, were bang on the money.

Having travelled around Sri Lanka from Negumbo to Kandy, Ella down to Yala National Park we decided we needed a week of relaxation. The Asian Jewel did not disappoint and went way above and beyond any expectations we had. From the moment we arrived to a warm welcoming party (especially Tanya who gave Sorelle a huge hug) to the moment we left, nothing was too much trouble for the lovely owners, Dale and Tanya, and the great team of staff working there. All made us feel welcome and relaxed from the onset.

The room we had (Jasmine) was stunning with 4 poster bed and a balcony over looking the lagoon, air conditioning, fan, mini-bar providing the creature comforts. We also had a nose at all the other rooms which were up to the same very high standard. Every room displaying great attention to detail, even down to the aroma of your bed linen!

Breakfast was held outside every morning with beautifully prepared fresh fruit or even a full English if you wanted a bit of western fare. A wander to the gorgeous pool area (regularly cleaned by Vijay) followed with a refreshing dip and then a laze on the sun beds. A wide choice of lunch was available with the prawn sandwich or salad a firm favourite often served by one of our favourites, Cyril.

Lazy afternoons with a possibility of a tuk tuk ride to Hikkadua (about 250 rupees) were our standard days. Dale organised a trip for us which involved tuk tuk, boat ride, visit to a monastery and plenty of wildlife which was great (definitely leave early as the lake can become busy later on). We had a packed lunch made for us as we left early. Get Dale to suggest the best time to go. After a ‘busy’ day we generally found ourselves on the veranda, watching the lagoon and browsing the amazing and extensive menu available at the Asian Jewel. Tried to sample most but would need a much longer holiday to cover it all. Tim can recommend the Sheppard’s pie and the spaghetti bolognaise, but in fairness all the dishes were wonderfully prepared by the kitchen team. Every dish almost looks too good to eat, as again the attention to detail is second to none, with plates beautifully decorated.

All in all a great place to stay, relax and eat. A HUGE thank you to all that work there including the surfing dude/tuk tuk driver who was always available when we needed to get somewhere (which in honesty wasn’t very often!!).

In summary an amazing location, immaculate rooms, outstanding service and a great atmosphere. Stay here with absolute confidence and if you go to Hikkaduwa, this is by far the ONLY place to stay. We will definitely be back, even just to visit this little jewel!

All the best Sorelle and Tim (say hi to Cyril!!!)

What's not to like? An already wonderful holiday was made even better by the care and consideration of all the staff of Asian Jewel and the beautiful decor and surroundings of the hotel. If there is any doubt in your mind about choosing this hotel over others, know that probably no where else in Sri Lanka will you get free hugs and kisses on arrival and departure (thankfully from Tania -not Dale) and that the attention to detail in making our holiday as perfect as possible was second to none.
The staff were all great, but special mention goes to Cyril who is now the subject of hundreds of my girlfriends photos. Sadly my tea pouring technique will never be as good, a fact that I am constantly reminded of!

Tanya and Dale have created the perfect hideaway. Chic and stylish decor, a lush garden overlooking the lake, attentive service and amazing food combine to create the ultimate chillout. Yes, you really will want rice and curry every night as it's ever changing and totally delicious.

So glad we decided to come here, even if it was supposed to be monsoon. Book this now, you won't be disappointed.
