We stayed in this retreat for three nights and had a really relaxing stay. The only way around the large retreat is walking, cycling or by golf cart. It has 8 unique lodges built over many acres with the land in between being taken over by rice paddies. Plenty of wild life including water monitors and peacocks. The food was exceptional and you must try the 9 curry dinner, but I suggest you share it between two.
If we return to Sri Lanka this places will be high on the list of locations.

Room tip: Suggest you go onto the web-site for the retreatl to review the rooms as they are all unique

Our final stop in Sri Lanka and one of our favourite hotels we have ever stayed at. Utterly beautiful rooms and landscape. There are 9 rooms but you feel like you have the acres of farm land to yourself. We had a glass of wine with the owner who like the whole team was fantastic and took the time to explain the idea behind the hotel. Couldn’t recommend highly enough - an unforgettable stay.

Dear Valued Customer
Thank you very much for taking your valuable time to review about your recent stay at Kalundewa Retreat. Our whole team (including the chairman) is very happy in reading the favourable comments. as you have mentioned Kalundewa is a special place where luxury meets nature plus agriculture. There are only 9 rooms available in a total land area of more than 100 acres.
We hope you would come back again for another memorable stay. We can't wait to welcome you again

Thanking you

This is a brave project and an exciting one. Other positive reviews refer to the transformation of a failed banana plantation into what is an eco hotel.p also engaging and encouraging the local community. It is admirable.

It is a serious getaway where,in amongst the paddy filled and the small lakes you gaze at nature. Birds, rice mountains etc.

Choose your accommodation carefully. We were put in Ehela ( a misunderstanding) which you should avoid. Small single room bottom of the range. You need to be in one of the discrete buildings such a Attikkka. Check if you have your own deck and even a plunge pool. Those rooms are a different league altogether.

Yes ants do get in under the front doors ( but not near the bed) peacocks shriek, ( but not at night) and the dawn chorus is just that.... but that’s the point of this place,

it is a brilliant place to use to go on the northern cultural trips.. dambulla, Kandy, Sigiriya etc. And when back go to the wonderful swimming pool on your bike through the rice fields. Memorable. Also do the bird walk with a real ornithologist and the 12k bike round around the village and along the canal with Kingfishers darting all around.

Food is good, and breakfast excellent. There seems to be a wine list now. location though is the key issue. It is remarkable.

Room tip: Do your research and call them

Dear Valued customer

Thank you very much for sharing your holiday experience with the tripadvisor community.
First of all we would like to apologise for the miscommunication we faced with your/our local travel agent with the room category. We were able to sort that out very well. We do love the facts that you have enjoyed our food specially the breakfast, cycle rides, the nature walk and the excursions. I also have enjoyed the 12k bike ride with you to the kalundewa village.
Attika chalet is one of our newer additions and we would like to give a total "eco-lodge" experience to our travellers by the concept. (both Karanda and Attikka) However our housekeeping team is very keen on the cleanliness and and tidiness of the rooms even though these rooms are under a beautiful canopy of trees.
The lake around the room creates a great Eco system for the nature.

We hope you would come back again for another memorable stay with us

Thank you again for the wonderful review

My Wife and I spent the tail end of our honeymoon at the Kalundewa Retreat. It is a nature mecca and oasis of serenity. We made sure to go on multiple bike rides, get massages*, and had our honeymoon dinner prepared by the chef at a table on a dock of the lake. We had staff that tended to our every ask and the Head Chef wanted to make sure that everything about the experience was memorable and not just the food! The room was extremely comfortable. We stayed in the Kumbuk Chalet with the private dipping pool. It was wonderful. The dipping pool was great but the water was freezing and it wasn't that hot that it was easy to just jump in and feel refreshed. Make sure to bring a good book or two. If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful getaway and going to Sri Lanka, we would highly recommend the Kalundewa Retreat!

*They only had or have one Masseuse on staff during our visit. Being our Honeymoon we hoped to get a couples massage but that was not an option. The Masseuse was very professional and we just had to go one after the other.

Room tip: We stayed in the Kumbuk Chalet. It was phenomenal but not 100% private.

Dear Guest

Thank you so much for taking your valuable time to review about your stay at Kalundewa Retreat.
We are very happy in reading all the favourable comments mentioned. We are truly happy that, we were able to make your honeymoon stay a great and a memorable one.
Kumbuk chalet is one of our favourite rooms and therefore with the higher demand it has, we have already built two new chalets even larger than the kumbuk chalet in the lower lake (Karanda and Attikka)

Your comment on our masseuse is well noted and now our customers do have the option of having the massage in their own room as well. We are building a new SPA and there we will be recruiting more staff.

Thank you again for the lovely review
Hope to see you again soon

Chef Dinesh, Resident Naturalist Tharaka, Manager Heshan and all the staff and crew at Kalundewa have been so extremely hospitable to my husband and I in our short three nights' stay at the Atthika romantic villa. I've never felt such warmth and attentiveness from every single member of a hotel group, and I don't think it's because of the fact that I am pregnant that they have treated me with such care and attention! It felt like I had family looking after me in the whole time we stayed there - so thank you, Kalundewa crew!

Go to Kalundewa not only for their modern and impressive architecture, but also go to learn about what their retreat stands for, and this is what the price you pay for a room will go to support - conservation of the environment, passion for creating a sanctuary for the wildlife, and supporting a sustainable farm-to-table concept that provides jobs for the farmers who work on the acres of paddy fields within Kalundewa.

We were concerned we may be short of activities to keep us occupied, but on the contrary it was made up for in so many other ways such as the full day 8am-4pm excursion to Sigiriya and jeep ride through Hurulu Ecopark with Tharaka (as part of our package), the lower lake boat ride to bird watch, a nature trail walk around the retreat's compound, the natural spring pool right outside the retreat entrance which overlooks the sunset (tip: go between 5-6 pm). There were other activities too such as free-to-use bicycles, and canoes at the upper lake, yoga (where they can call in external instructor), paddy field walks and interact with the locals.

Just take note - Huge bats swarm the tall trees right outside our chalet (they don't come near you or the chalet) and they shriek up until sunset and start again at dawn. So if you're a light sleeper, pick another room. Even though Atthika is the newest chalet (the 9th) in the retreat, there were many red ants that found its way from the trees to our entrance, pool deck and outdoor dining deck so we didn't spend any time at all outside. It was fine on the inside though - the room make up and turn down services are great.

It is a place that will definitely make you wish you would return to again in the future, if not for the resorts, then for the people and the peace and quiet. Highly recommended!

Dear Guest

WOW! what a lovely comment about Kalundewa Retreat.
We are pleased to note from the favourable comments, that you have had a wonderful stay with us. Our whole staff is happy in reading your review including my self, executive chef and the naturalist. It is our duty and responsibility to look after our guests in many ways during their stay at Kalundewa.

We also love the fact that you were able to enjoy all the nature activities and excursions that we have organised by the hotel. We also thought that three days would not enough for you to discover the whole.
Both Karanda and Attikka are our newest additions and total "eco-lodge" experience (with a luxury setup) will be given to the visitors. The bats are only staying for a temporary period of time and they will be leaving when their next generation finds a new place.

Thank you again for the lovely and encouraging review
We hope you would come back again for another memorable stay (Probably with the new family member)
