“Beautiful hotel”
Reviewed April 8, 2014

We took a trip to Sri Lanka and we chose to spend 3 nights at Amaya Lake hotel when we arrived. Very well located geographically, we visited many sites for Dambulla. The hotel is on the edge of a lake, lodge in comfortable bungalows, a comfortable bed, a large bathroom. There is a great pool. Meals buffet is excellent. I recommend this place as for his performances for his situation.

We were very disappointed with our stay at Amaya Lake. Check in was very slow, and service was very poor throughout the hotel, particularly at reception and at the bar. Our room was quite nice although the tv was poorly located and our couch was made of wood. English standard of staff was poor, the rooms are far from the reception and lighting at night is not good enough. Towels were 1 star standard, there were few tv channels and the phone in the room didn't work well. The pool was nice, plenty of loungers and some nice touches with housekeeping. The lake view is nice but not spectacular. It is also a poor location for Sigiriya Rock and Dambulla Caves unless you have your own driver.

Room Tip: All rooms are far from the reception but not all wings have buggies provided.

Location at the lake is nice, same as garden. We recommend to wake up and watch sunrise.

If you want to travel to Dambulla, Sigiriya or else, try to manage drivers somewhere else. It's not close to get anywhere and hotel charges much more (we needed to go to Kandy and hotel offered us driver for 14000 rupees but it's possible to get very good a/c van for 8000 rupees. This is inappropriate.)

Pool is nice and clean and big enough.

Food (we had only breakfast) was very good and a lot of choices.

Prices for drinks are higher than it should be.

Staff is ok, but we had to urge 3 times to fix the safe in our villa. Not very warm welcome, but decent.

Room is dark. We like more light. And the room and furniture remember old days. They should modernize - what was probably nice 10 years ago, now looks as not appropriate to the price.

Stay 1 night here with full leasurly. Beautiful place. Lake area is very silent and calm, with excellent scenic views. Foods are good. Activities available. Can recommended to any other friend. Also can see sigiriya rock.

Room Tip: Select rooms in lake area.

Staying at Amaya lake for the third time i was once again struck by the beauty of the hotel as well as the friendly and amazing staff. As much as people say that there is no place like home,Amaya lake just has that ability to give you that freedom and comfort you experience at home . From the time you set a foot on the premises you start experiencing the sadly dying locality while not feeling left out. Not to forget the cleanliness of the entire hotel from the rooms to the area by the lake . Amaya lake is one of the best places to feel at home away from home.

The hotel is situated in the middle of a forest near a large lake where you can enjoy tranquility and the beauty of nature. The moment we arrived in front of the hotel, we heard some music and saw it played on a large drum by four smiling Sri Lankan ladies of different ages. We asked our guide what this was and he told us this was a special welcome for us. Very nice, we had never ever experienced anything like this.
Another pleasant surprise for us was in the sleeping room in the bungalow where the hosts had made a wreath of tree leaves in a "welcome" sign. Late in the afternoon we went for a walk to the shore of the lake and then for dinner. When we came back the wreath of leaves was changed into "good night". And it is small gestures like these that make a tourist's stay unforgettable in one way or another.
The hotel offers very good food - both local and standard (like for us, Europeans). The restaurant is of the open type, next to the pool and the forest, where you can hear the beautiful songs of various birds. And in or near to your room you can hear or see or sense the presence of other animals like squirrels, frogs or small geckos (on the ceiling). From time to time during the night some large bird or other may perch on a branch next to your window and wake you up in the middle of the night, but, being on holiday, this cannot make you angry - on the contrary, it adds to the experience of an exotic environment.
The location of the place is excellent, very near to a large number of Sri Lankan historical monuments, temples, natural reserves, gardens, etc. It is a hotel with very good facilities and a great location in the nature that offers more than what would normally be expected from a four-star establishment.
We had a great stay at the Amaya Lake Hotel in Sri Lanka that we'll stay in our memory - and we would not hesitate visiting it again.
