“Beautiful and quiet by the lake”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

My husband and I stayed two nights here recently. A very nice, quiet resort by the lake. I would recommend this place to anyone who would like a nice, relaxing holiday. Staff are very friendly, always very helpful and always there when needed. Only get wi-fi in the bar and dinner area. The beds were a little hard to sleep on but like most places we have been in Sri Lanka.

My self and spouse stayed one night here on May 2013. This is a very clam and quite hotel, located near Kandalama water reserve. I would like to recommend this place to anyone who wants to stay at ECO environment.
Staff is very friendly and always helpful from check-in to check-out. We stayed at a chalet like room and it was clean and well maintained.

Amaya Lake Dambulla gets 5 stars from me. We booked the standard chalets and were upgraded to Luxury Rooms without even requesting. They accomodated our request for an early check in at 6am, 7hrs before check in time. I celebrated my bday in this beautiful resort and they arranged a chocolate cake for me at midnight :)

Breakfast is fantastic with a wide array of choices between Continental and Srilankan cuisine. In my 8day Sri Lankan trip, of all the Rice & Curry dishes I had tried, Amaya's was my favorite. Also do not miss the spa, very reasonably priced. I only got the Lower Limb massage and it was soo good (especially after the Sigiriya Rock climb & the Dambulla Golden Temple climb), I wish I had gone for a whole body massage.

Outstanding service and very good value for money. We know we stayed at the best place because we chose to have dinner at the very expensive 5star Heritance Kandalama nearby one night and we were greeted by a swarm of mosquitos at the entrance, the lifts, the corridors. It seemed like a dark & gloomy old hotel. We absolutely loved our stay at Amaya, surrounded by lush greenery and breathtaking views of the lake.

Room Tip: All the rooms are individual chalets surrounded by lush greenery.

beautiful property which is very well maintained. lot of bird life. Food was mediocre including the local speciality. staff are very helpful. rooms are spotless.

located away from the city so no chance of stepping out for a meal etc. Only bottled water (chargeable) is available. took a lot of effort to get ordinary drinking water.

This was my second visit after a decade in May 2013, It is unbelievable the transformation the property has gone through, the staff, the food, rooms, no words to express my first impression .. overall this can be called heaven in paradise. Recommended for the traveler who will enjoy superior indulgence and a bit of pampering.

Well done team Amaya!!!!

Amaya Lake cannot be faulted on its picturesque setting. The lake itself together with the well manicured surrounds and wildlife are I think the strong point of this hotel.

The food is reasonable. Breakfast had a wide array of western and Asian selections. Dinner was definitely more western orientated but it was nice enough.

The rooms however left a bit to be desired. Although spacious they were just generally dirty - scuff marks, fingerprints, nothing major but you expect more when you are paying 100+ a night. The seating in the living room was rock hard and the shower recess had what looked like tannin staining on the floor.

It was never going to bother me unless the water coming out of the shower head was dirty but again, not indicative of 4 star hotel. Furthermore, the toilet had a nasty smell and for some reason the bathroom door was fitted with one of those devices which stops it from slamming. The downside was that every time I needed to get in there I had to push against what may as well have been a 20 tonne door, it just wasn't necessary. Numerous insects and geckos made it into the room at night so keep that in mind if that sort of thing bothers you.

The staff were friendly although at the point of overbearing at times. Even with the privacy please tag attached to the door I would get staff knocking on my door at 9 at night looking to place flower arrangements on my bed for a tip. When I checked out I was asked 3 separate times by 3 separate staff whether I had used the minibar and then almost had my bags snatched off me by the porter to carry them all of 2 metres to the car.

All in all the location is superb, both for the hotel and for surrounding attractions in the area. But there is little choice to eat elsewhere and after a long hot day you accept you'll be eating at the hotel and find that you aren't as fussed about the food selection as you may think.

The staff definitely need to be retrained on what is acceptable and what isn't when it comes to service and streamline their processes somewhat. One of the head porters there also tended to get a little upset if you wanted to carry your own bags or do something didn't benefit him.

Most of the negatives listed in this review are small issues and if rectified could go a long way to lifting the rating of this hotel.
