Heritance Kandalama
Ranked #3 of 18 Hotels in Dambulla
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed May 4, 2008

we stayed at the Kandalama for 5 nights on a three week trip of Sri Lanka and the Maldives. After getting married in Bentota by the coast the Kandalama was a perfect change of environment and experience. As other reviews state the design of the hotel and location by the lake is tranquil and stunning. Monkeys, bird life and the wondeful sound of the jungle on the balcony each night will make our honeymoon unforgettable. The bathroom is incredible with amazing views thanks to the glass frontage.
The buffet resturant was of a high standard and they managed to create variety each night. The staff were attentive and so considerate. Sitting in the infinity pool staring at Siguri rock was a memorable highlight.
Our driver took us on trips each day. Kandy and the elephant orphanage were wonderful but note the days are very tiring and to be away for such long days from such a remarkable hotel was unfortunate.
Would i recommend- ABSOLUTELY!

What an amazing hotel - 1km from end to end, built into the side of a mountain! The rooms are all really comfortable, and the bathrooms (with floor to ceiling glass looking over the lake) are spectacular.

Given this place is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, the food is pretty impressive too. I'm typically not a fan of buffets, but this one was pretty good - for breakfast and dinner.

Geoffrey Bawa was an amazing architect - to stay here shows just why!

Like no other place I have been before. We stayed for 2 nights whilst touring Sri Lanka and found this to be a great location for travelling. Our room was excellent with a open glass fronted bathroom. You often saw monkeys in the morning sitting out side your window. There is an infinity pool that overlooks the lake and monkeys sit in trees watching you. The restaurant was huge and stunning with great food served to suit all tastes.

We got married at the Kandalama on the 10th March which was incredible. We arrived on the 6th March and were shown straight to the terrace area by the pool (one of three) given a refreshing drink (beware of the slime apple i was curious tried it and regretted it!) and a cold towel to freshen up. We were then shown to our room which was on the Syrigia wing of the hotel and had amazing views across the Kandalama tank to the lion fortress itself.

The room was fantastic, clean, tidy, balcony complete with monkeys!! The bathroom was a liberating experience with no blinds or curtains your every move was watched by the aforementioned monkeys! Lovely jacuzzi bath ran the width of the window in the bathroom and a rain shower above it.

The public areas of the hotel are open to the surrounding jungle and animals so there are lots of bats and bugs attracted to the lights at night however nothing to worry about mother in law coped fine and she hates flying things! The hotel design is seemless with its surroundings which is part of its charm.

The meals are all served as a buffet but wow what a buffet! There was more choice than I knew what to do with. Obligatory curry at every meal they were lovely.......always plenty of choice from vegetarian, european etc. We stayed there for a week and apart from the wedding night ate at the buffet every day and never got bored. The food and beverage staff were all wonderful and looked after you very well. The wedding night we had a meal at the fine dining restaurant. The food was lovely but we also thought the buffet was very good we probably wouldn't have bothered if it wasn't part of the wedding package.

The hotel has three swimming pools the infinity which was by far the most popular although it never seemed to get busy no more than 10 of us at any time! The other pool on the Dambulla wing was equally lovely no view though which was why it was always empty. The other was on the roof and didn't look all that appealing.

A quick note on the wedding if any of you are thinking of getting married there...............DO IT! If you want a wedding abroad but not the usual beach wedding this is it we even have monkeys in some of the wedding photos! The staff at the hotel bend over backwards to do all they can to make the day amazing. No hassle no fuss just a magic occasion.

This was the best trip we have ever had and not just because of the wedding because it is an amazing beautiful place with lots to see and do in the surrounding area. We will definately be going back and have already recommended to our family and friends.

I'll keep it brief as after all the other positive reviews, i dont think anybody would need much convincing! Hotel is lovely and blends in well with the beautiful location, food excellent (although true it is served late, we were late back from sightseeing and wouldnt have managed any earlier anyway!) Much better location than all the beach hotels for touring, oddly Kuoni was the only TO we found who offered central sri lanka hotels? We booked a deluxe room which was really nice, and well worth it for the jacuzzi bath with full length window overlooking lake/jungle, and the occasional group of monkeys wandering past!! Service excellent also, and easy to arrange tours with Kuoni as we were basically given a car and driver and could adapt the set tours offered to take in what we wanted (although word of warning, the driving in sri lanka can be pretty scary, my life flashed before my eyes more than once!!!!)
I would thoroughly recommend the Kandalama.

Since there have been 112 reviews (mostly good) before mine, I'll be brief. This is the best hotel in the area for visiting the Dambulla Cave Temples, Sigiriya and Polonaruwa. It is also close to Minneriya National Park. The location is beautiful and Sigiriya Rock can be seen from the hotel. Rooms on the upper floors have better views.

Be forewarned - the dining room doesn't open until 7:30 PM so if you are hungry from a long trip, you are out of luck. One night they didn't open the doors until 7:45. However, breakfast at 6:30 AM allows you to get a jump on things if you prefer to climb Sigiriya early in the morning.

We stayed here when touring Sri Lanka. It is a wonderful hotel. Our room had lovely views over the lake with Sirigya in the distance. There are lots of monkeys that come onto the balconies, and seeking out food from rooms, so ensure you leave doors shut!

The corridors are open, and bats fly along them - which seemed alarming at first!!

The stay at this hotel was definitely a highlight of our holiday

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Heritance Kandalama is shaped like the outspread wings of a bird, following the line of the cliff from which it seems to emerge. The hotel is a staggering 1km from end to end, and rises up seven floors, yet appears to be a perfectly natural extension of the mountainside. The flat roof and timber pillars support a screen of vegetation that attracts local wildlife. The abundance of real-life animals around the hotel is complemented by wonderful large-scale sculptures within it. A metal owl is suspended outside the main restaurant; wooden elephants inhabit the lounge; a stone cobra uncoils along the terrace overlooking the infinity pool. However, while focusing on highlighting its enchanting natural surroundings, our luxury resort in Sri Lanka gives priority to providing its guests with the finest comforts and service. ... more   less
