This hotel is absolutely amazing. The views are breathtaking, especially at dawn when everything is so quiet & all you can hear & see is wildlife. Totally peaceful & heavenly! The hotel lives up to its 5 star rating with great facilities & great staff.

We spent two nights here as part of a trip in Sri Lanka, and the hotel was wonderful. You really feel like you are in the jungle...monkeys, monitor lizards, bats and fabulous birds. Watch-out for the monkeys, they know how to get into the room if you leave the doors unlocked!!
We had a 5th floor room that was overlooking Kandalama Lake and Sigiriya...a great view to wake-up to!! Our room was large and well appointed and had a separate bathroom with a jacuzzi...although care was required to avoid falling when getting-in!!
We ate in the buffet restaurant and although it was a little canteen-style, the food was good.
The staff were a little aloof (that was not typical of others hotels in Sri Lanka that we stayed at) and missed some some fairly basic things like cautioning guests about the monkeys, not giving warnings about the numerous powers cuts that occurr and not agreeing with customers the currency to be used to debit credit cards. Only little things, but basic!
We would recommend this hotel if visiting the nearby attractions at Dambulla, Sigiriya and Polonnarawu.

Room Tip: The higher rooms have the better views and choose a room facing north for a view of Sigiriya.

2 nights was a short stay.

Location, I.e. view and surrounding - was perfect. Don't know about the other rooms but we had a splendid view of the lake and perfect sunset from the top floor. Could guess the lower floors (1-3) would be more facing trees, but there should be enough rooms with a great opening view. The other wing (the hotel is about 1km in length, and literally in a "wing" form) we heard has a view over the woods and lake, imaginable great sun rise.

Food was ok++, for a buffet with so many guests... Yes it's a big hotel with unfortunately many "package tour" gang stuffed (guess its business). To the hotels' credit, they do change the theme of the food each night. But just imagine if you are on a vacation from China and the night you stay they run a booth of fried wontons :-). It's Sri Lanka, so a greater display of curry wouldn't hurt. For those who aren't good with repeat meal of spices, one could always take a breather with western/other cuisine.

What would make a 5 rating?
A more refined ala carte dining (especially for those who will be staying longer and want to see what the chef can do).

But all in all, a great vacation destination!

A special hotel, due to its (somewhat) remote jungle setting, a unique experience in Sri Lanka and anywhere. Good to stay and relax for a few days/nights. Note that the 'inside' atmosphere of the hotel is dull (a lot of open spaces) and it suffers from short power blackouts at certain times (this we experienced in some other places in Sri Lanka as well).

It took a bit of driving on bad roads to get there. Check-in was efficient, but the check-in guy was business-like and not that friendly (and he snubbed at the (regular) tip I gave him at the end!).

We had a bigger family room, which was awesome. A large living room with balcony and a comfortable bathroom. Wonderful big bed and separate bed for our 4-year-old daughter. It had windows all around, including in the bathroom next to the jacuzzi. Wonderful jungle views and the monkeys came to visit to put on a show in the balcony and in front of the bathroom several times. We never opened the balcony door as we were told the monkeys will attack and grab anything they can. Other jungle animals are also around, including some kind of rodents, birds, bats at night, geckos etc. One night we were kept awake for some time by some animal, moving and making noises in our room(a gecko or a frog?, we weren't able to find it).

The only negative in the room was the yellow-brown dirty water spouting out of the jacuzzi when we tried it.

Decent breakfast buffet but not great. Same for dinner, with hits and misses in the food items. Service is below average. We also ate in the a la carte restaurant on the top floor; it seems really pretentious but the food is excellent and not expensive. Loved the elaborate Sri Lankan curry with the extra table with all different types of condiments. Children's plate was huge and my daughter loved it. Also good mushroom soup and chicken dish. Very good service.

Several swimming pools. We used only the infinity pool on the bar/reception level (even during the rain, it rains often here), which again offers great views of the jungle. Pretty good lunch sandwiches at the poolside.

The hotel is luxurious and has the most comfortable beds of all time - the pillows were enough to make the greatest insomniac have a great nights sleep! The food, staff, swimming pool etc are all five star quality. The only down-sides are the location which is too far for anyone wanting to experience local life and the monkeys which can be a nuisance and quite aggressive - one invaded our balcony and knocked a coffee cup out of my hand! Nevertheless we really enjoyed the facilities and would undoubtedly go again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Heritance Kandalama is shaped like the outspread wings of a bird, following the line of the cliff from which it seems to emerge. The hotel is a staggering 1km from end to end, and rises up seven floors, yet appears to be a perfectly natural extension of the mountainside. The flat roof and timber pillars support a screen of vegetation that attracts local wildlife. The abundance of real-life animals around the hotel is complemented by wonderful large-scale sculptures within it. A metal owl is suspended outside the main restaurant; wooden elephants inhabit the lounge; a stone cobra uncoils along the terrace overlooking the infinity pool. However, while focusing on highlighting its enchanting natural surroundings, our luxury resort in Sri Lanka gives priority to providing its guests with the finest comforts and service. ... more   less
