“Exclusive hotel !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2013

Very special hotel designed by a famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa in a quite remote location. Then again it's surrounded by jungle, pure nature ! Hotel is well integrated into a massif rock party that is also present inside the whole building.
Reception desk in the lobby looks very cool, even a little bit unwelcoming but after a smooth check-inn we discovered our room.
Wauw, very large and well furnished room and bathroom with separate bath and a big shower.
One wall of the shower is completely in glass, so, when you take a shower you have a magnificent view on the jungle...and visa verso !!! (don' t worry, black roller-curtain present).
Good matres on the bed and well lighted room. Give yourself the time to discover the many light switches ...a hint...look sharp behind the bed on the black panel.
Dinner was superb here, many different isles (buffet style) with international, Chinese and Sri Lankan food.
Dessert...OMG, what a selection !!!
We slept very well, very quite during the night and the breakfast was of the same high standard as was the dinner.
Only one small remark...probably due to the remote location the drink prices in the bar and restaurant were significant higher than in the other hotels during our tour.
Don't hesitate to stay here when you are in this area !

I heard about this hotel through an architect friend of ours . Because we love architecture too , we booked for a 3 night stay . I requested a private land cruiser and a driver to pick us up before our arrival by email and Mr Nalinda arranged it all for me within minutes. We were picked up by Mr. Sarth a very charming and a very good driver. It was about 4 hours drive from Colombo airport but we didn't notice the time because Mr. Sarth kept us entertained all the way to the hotel, keeping us informed about the culture and interesting places to visit and things to do during our stay. We had a few laughs too. Love the hotel ,as soon as we arrive we were offered a nice cool drink . The hotel is huge so you need to be fit to walk around which suits us . We had a nice corner room with balcony with a fantastic view of the lake and the mountains , and beyond we can see Sirigaya Rock Fortress . The room is spacious and the bathtub is huge, and it took only a few minutes to fill ,it also has a huge glass window overlooking the lake .It is a bit tired but it's clean. The rain shower is powerful , love it. Breakfast is good . We are not big eaters so we're happy that we can order hot food like omelette , bacon, sausages etc and fresh fruits are abundant so it's sufficient for us. Service is efficient. One evening they had a buffet with BBQ and it was a hit. I especially enjoyed the fresh BBQ prawns . we also tried their other ala carte restaurant and that was excellent ..The infinity pool is lovely .We had a private trip to Sirigaya and Polonnaruwa and of course our driver was Mr. Sarth . They also arrange a private trip for us to go to the Elephant orphanage. Outside company came to pick us up . On our way to Colombo city of course we booked Mr. Sarth to drive us all the way to our next Hotel. We left early and we went to visit Dambulla cave temple , after that we went to Kandy . It was getting a bit late that day that Mr Sarth suggested that we stay overnight in Kandy. After we managed to cancell our first night stay in colombo , Mr Sarth helped us find a nice hotel in Kandy. We were amazed. The hotel he recommended was managed by his friend and we had a beautiful room with amazing view . He also made sure that we see the famous Kandy Dance and we just made it to the venue before the start of the performance that evening. The next day, on the way to Colombo , we stopped at a small tea factory and we had a private tour . bought some fresh spicy yummy cashew nuts in a side road shop , and had a short break at a nice cafe. I can't remember a hotel who had looked after us so well from the minute we arrived to the last minute we reached our next destination . They made us feel special and treated us like royalty. Incredible! Love Sri Lanka and it's people. Can't wait to go back there again.and I recommend you stay at this hotel if you want to visit the cultural triangle .

We booked three rooms at this hotel through Thomas Cook but upon arrival they unfortunately only had a record of one booking. They were extremely helpful and upgraded my boyfriend's parents to the Royal Suite free of charge and placed us in a luxury suite, also for no extra charge. This hotel is beyond anything I have ever, and most likely will ever, experience. Owing to the fact that the hotel is set in the side of a cliff with open corridors and overlooking the beautiful Sri Lankan planes we were lucky enough to have monkeys swinging from our balcony and knocking on our windows. Some people may have found this disruptive but it was just an added bonus for us. Although every member of staff was a delight and the food was delicious it really is the location of this beautifully designed hotel which makes the experience so magical. Highly recommended if you want to splash out during your stay in this amazing country.

Room Tip: Try to book a room with a view - it's unbelievable.

I have stayed there for one night on my tour to Dambulla and Sigiriya the view from the room is outstanding and the architecture is amazing a hotel in the jungle ,but masses of tourists and I had the feeling to be in a huge railway station coming and going it has nothing of coziness not even in the Kaludiya restaurant where I had dinner in the evening in order to escape the main restaurant, which I saw then in the morning at breakfast again this masses of tourists with the result the atmosphere like a self service restaurant like on a highway .Alltogether from the architecture very interesting , very nice room with outstanding view ,good food ,but a mass of tourists

Room Tip: a superior room is advisable

The setting the decor the food and staff were very good. The stay was very pleasant. It was centrally situated to launch trips to Sigiriya polonnaruwa and anuradhapura

The food was for tourist standards delicious and reasonably priced
The rooms were clean and the monkeys were there!

The staff very obliging and always smiling

Only unpleasant part was at the checkout

A very wise(?) guy at the finance desk is very smart to milk more than a fair share of your money for his bill.

The room prices are quoted in US dollars
He or she converts this to Sri Lankan Rupees at the bank selling rate for US dollars
Then when charging your credit card they convert it back to the currency of the credit card at the bank buying rate.
A healthy profit on this exchange rate manipulation and I pay this in addition to the hotel stay.. The shops and restaurents charge your credt card in Rupees but not the checkout personnel or at least this particular person who dealt with me. He did this without informing me.

So in order not to lose some money by double dipping be aware when checking out. and insist on being charged in Rupees. In my experience Credit Card providers usually get a much better conversion rate than the hotels. .

Designed by Sri Lankas famous architect Bawa this is an extraordinary hotel. Like Marmite you will appreciate its architecture and marvel at the location ,the infinity pool and the excellent food or hate the distance from the nearest road ,the long walk to dinner and the very hard pillows. We loved it and thought the staff in the busy dining room very well trained and well managed. Checkout was very efficient. A star in the Heritance group.

Room Tip: Level two rooms are dark because of the jungle creepers, go for a higher floor.

.

A highlight of our trip to Sri Lanka.
Downside is the high number of tour groups and the mass production nature of meals, but the hotel, facilities, meals, style and uniqueness
makes it a unique and exceptional experience.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Heritance Kandalama is shaped like the outspread wings of a bird, following the line of the cliff from which it seems to emerge. The hotel is a staggering 1km from end to end, and rises up seven floors, yet appears to be a perfectly natural extension of the mountainside. The flat roof and timber pillars support a screen of vegetation that attracts local wildlife. The abundance of real-life animals around the hotel is complemented by wonderful large-scale sculptures within it. A metal owl is suspended outside the main restaurant; wooden elephants inhabit the lounge; a stone cobra uncoils along the terrace overlooking the infinity pool. However, while focusing on highlighting its enchanting natural surroundings, our luxury resort in Sri Lanka gives priority to providing its guests with the finest comforts and service. ... more   less
