Stayed here with my family. Very good setting and concept but I don’t believe this is truly eco as they state. Anyhow the offering is good. Good value for money, great location and view. Very good staff who are friendly and attentive. Food was very good, a spread of different types of dishes. Rooms were large, clean and comfortable. They live up the five star luxury comfort. Will visit again if I come to Dambulla again.

Given the drive up the dirt road into the wilderness, you'll be forgiven in thinking you've taken a wrong turn. But you haven't. You're on the road to a great hotel.

Located just north of Dambulla, the Heritance Kandalama is one of the most interesting hotels I've stayed at. The location is absolutely stunning. Built on the side of a rock face, the hotel faces out over the nearby lake and flat lands, and over to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

Staff are very attentive from the moment you get out of the car, to when you're back in it again. We had a welcoming drink near the infinity pool while we were checked in and shown our rooms.

We were told we were upgraded to deluxe rooms. My sister in law had a great room. Wonderful view, layout and great bathroom. I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with ours in comparison. The bathroom looked a bit tired - I'm sure something can be done about refurbishing the showers to restore the black surrounds to black again, rather than the "soap scum" look that it had (I note that someone else has also commented about this).

Also we had half the bathroom window permanently blacked out for some reason, whereas my sister in laws wasn't. So we literally had half the view from the spa. But these really are only minor issues in the grand scheme of things.

We had breakfast and dinner buffets on both our days at the hotel. The food is absolutely wonderful. And the staff in the dining areas were terrific in explaining the Sri Lankan cuisine. My only criticism here would be that I'd like to have seen more Sri Lankan options to choose from and less Western dishes. Would have been great to experience more local cuisine (after all, that's part of the reason for travelling). But congratulations to all the chefs and cooks for a great job each day - none of the dishes disappointed.

Pool facilities were very good. And the vibe around the bar area was electric at times, being there during the Twenty20 cricket matches.

I'd like to give a thank you to Chathura, the gym manager. I used the gym facilities each day during my stay, and Chathura was a great personal trainer to have around and help out with exercises. Like all the Sri Lankan's I came across on my trip, he was always smiling and very helpful. Many thanks!

Apart from the minor improvement points above, the stay overall was a fantastic experience. Really no other location on Earth like this one. All four of us agreed that we would definitely return. And we very much look forward to doing so!

Highly recommended.

Thanking you for staying with us and taking time off your busy schedule to give us feedback and glad that you enjoyed the experience in being being one with nature. Your comments are truly appreciated as we have a huge challenge with water as the source is tube wells and contains a substance in the water that leaves a whitish mark on all dark surfaces in the bath room. Nevertheless we are exploring ways of avoiding this or taking it off but have still not been successful. Thanking you once again and looking forward to welcome you back at Heritance Kandalama.

My friend and I stayed here for 3 nights, the first day we relaxed and explored the hotel, swam in the infinity pool and marvelled at the architecture, the setting and the grandeur of Geoffrey Bawa's concept. It was a convenient location to visit the ancient cities from and after the heat of those drives it was a haven to return to. The buffet meals are superb and the service friendly and courteous.

Room Tip: Our room was 315 so close to the end of Sigiriya wing. Watching the monkeys swing through the trees we looked out on was great.

What an experience! I was completely taken away by this beautiful hotel, everything from Geoffrey Bawa's beautiful architecture, to the hotel's strong environmental protection approach, the delicious meals, beautiful outdoor infinity pool - this is an experience you should definitely take up if you are visiting Sri Lanka. Go on the eco tour or other trek tours run the sustainable manager, Navin if you can. He's a passional bird watcher, soft spoken, and full of wonderful information.
The atmosphere of the hotel staff is really friendly. Sometimes the younger staff struggled a little with English, so we had some trouble getting the right order by the pool once.
I had a spa treatment which is outsourced. It was extremely pampering. The therapist was very good.
Whilst it takes a while to get to the hotel by road, once you get there, you realise it's definitely worth it. Do not miss this one!!

Room Tip: Suite room - the views from the balcony and bathroom are magnificent.
