We visited here as part of a tour around Sri Lanka and this hotel was ideal for visiting the historic sites of Sri Lanka such as Dambulla rock caves, Sirigiya fortress and Anuradhapura.

It is a very unique hotel, built into the mountain with an eco-slant and you do feel very much part of the jungle and part of the mountaim when staying there. Entering the hotel really has the wow factor with a reception open to the elements! All of the staff wear sarongs and are barefoot on black marble floors. The staff are very polite and attentive for the most part.

They request that you close all doors at night to stop monkeys breaking in.

The rooms are very eco-minded with biodegradable this, and recycled that with rainfall showers. The TVs have all the normal channels you would expect in an international hotel - BBC World, CNN etc

There are two restaurants at the hotel, a la carte and buffet and both are pretty high quality and cook both local and international food. The breakfasts were pretty special. The only downside is that you are pretty much a captive audience here and prices are high by Sri Lankan standards.

It was also a very romantic place with the flutist playing while the sun set with a view of the local lake (well, hundreds of years old reservoir - SL is full of them!) and the occasional wild elephant.

Now for the negatives, I think the major problem lies with lack of upkeep. There was only one pool available while we there, now that's fine as pools need work from time to time but they had hardly any sunloungers and if you are visiting ancient cities, you tend to get very hot and dusty when sightseeing! Allied to this were sun towels with holes in them was unacceptable for a hotel with aspirations.
The bar service was funereally slow, I understand wanting to convey a chilled ambience but waiting fifteen minutes for a beer is ever so slightly too laid back.

But these issues should not detract from what is a magnificent and beautiful hotel. You should go there.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the lake.

I just loved how the hotel incorporated nature into its architecture. From the hanging curtain of greeneries to the boulders along the walkways, the whole hotel seems to be apart of its natural environment.

The services was impeccable. I have left my tshirt out at the balcony (despite the warning on the balcony door) and 2 little baby monkeys too a liking and ran off with it, then left it hanging on the tree branches between 2 floor levels. A quick notification to the staffs and my tshirt was returned without any fuss.

Breakfast was really good with a wide selection of food. A special thank to Mr Nalinda for the interesting tour in search of dragonflies and to the village. I enjoyed it very much.

No doubt its one of the best hotel around and well worth its price.

What can I say.... too much in mind....but less words to explain. Simply put, Architecture, surroundings, service, rooms, facilities, food and beverages all justify every penny you pay for the place. We had a stunning weekend at kandalama and Kandalama Thank you. For all nature loving people this is the place to visit and I can guarantee you won't be disappointed. Kachchan Pool, Kaludiya pool, entrance, the walk way form entrance to the Kachchan pool, roof top, spy glass are some of my favorite places of the hotel and I'm pretty sure most of the guys who visited the hotel would agree with me. Without a doubt this is one of the best 5 star hotel in Sri Lanka and people who value nature and comfort this is the ideal place to visit. I would definitely love to revisit the place again.

We had faultless service, lovely staff and wonderful food. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to the royal suite which was absolutely superb. The drive to the hotel gave no hint of the amazing hotel at the end of our journey. We wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the facilities.
