Our guide started the climb from the halfway point so we were saved a series of steps. From there, it was an easy leisurely walk to the top . You can either take the steps or keep left and climb up the slope. Lots of monkeys running around but not aggressive. Beware if you buy lotus flowers as the monkeys love to eat the "lotus heart" and will snatch the flowers away. At the top, you must take off your shoes and pay LKR25 to the "shoekeeper". The cave paintings are very beautiful and well preverved. It is a series of 5 separate caves ranging from the 5th century to 1970s. Be mindful not to touch any of the statues as a sign of respect . View from the top was very nice. Highly recommended !

A little of a walk up the hill but well worth the effort. Full of history, well maintained, and couldn't be better located. But the most important thing to remember is make sure you keep your shoes on until you get to the entrance of the temple at the top where they have a small stand for you to leave your shoes. You don't want to walk up or down the hill barefoot. Insist on this no matter what they tell you. It is allowed.

This is 200 step climb to the temple. It is worth it. Great old sculptures and artistry waiting at the top. As with Sri Lanka - they are only looking at making money. I would advise you take of your shoes before you get to the top or they will charge you to keep them safe.

We had a great afternoon in Dambulla, visiting the Cave temples and the religious works of art housed within them. The climb upto the temples is long and steep, but after sweltering in the sun, the view that greets you from the top is breathtaking. We were fortunate enough to have our knowledgeable guide explain the caves and their contents, but most of the information can be found in the good guide books. Highly recommended.

A visit to the five adjacent caves that house these ancient temples is worth the hot climb uphill from the carpark. The vibrant paintings and sculptures inside are awe-inspiring, given their age.
