The modern temple at the bottom might put some people off but the Cave Temple at the top is worth a visit. There is a road up the side to the right which saves a long walk up steps. From the road there are still a few steps or a pathway. The Temple is fronted onto a number of caves with a variety of statues of Buddha both standing and reclining. In front to the Temple is a long quadrangle with a lovely pond. There is a large tree sharing much of quad. The caves themselves are very old with some lovely wall paintings. We gave the museum a miss.

Well this was a little treat on our trip. I was not expecting this at all. It's definitely a must see in Sri Lanka.

Don't get put off by the touts, the crowds or the entrance to the Buddhist museum which looks like a plasticky gate to Disneyland.
Bring water and a little patience and stamina and walk up the stairs. Grandmas can do it, so you can too!
At the top, behind a gate with more officials and touts there are the famous caves. I suggest you start with the one furthest in the back, and from there work your way back towards the entrance. As you progress the caves and statues get more and more impressive - you will probably share a feeling of enormous respect and awe, regardless if you are a Buddhist or not.
In between the 5 caves let your eyes rest. Enjoy the outlook to the countryside below you, enjoy the cheeky monkeys, enjoy some people watching.
Definitely visit worth the climb, regardless of how hot it may be.

The Dambulla Cave Temples are a must-see. The caves are truly remarkable, filled with Buddha statues and beautiful frescoes covering the walls and ceilings. Highly recommended.
