While there is a long climb, it is not a big deal. The temple has some interesting paintings as well as water drip that defies the laws of gravity. Crazy how much effort to carve these caves out of the rock. And to see the different styles progress through time were also interesting. Seems like the more recent, the poorer the quality. Stop by the secret compartment box guys and have a chuckle. And remember to pay the guy watching your shoes....

We visited the cave temple at Dambulla and found it fascinating. The paintings are stunning. Well worth going.

The long step-climb up to the caves is well worth it. We had plenty of time to explore and immerse ourselves in the caves, and though we were offered a guide we decided to explore them for ourselves... and we are glad we did because we could pause and absorbe the atmosphere on our own terms. It was incredible to think that some of the painting on the caves were over 1500 years old, and each had its own unique character. The views are also impressive, and even on a hot day we were able to feel a gentle breeze.

We had an excellent guide who explained very clearly about all the caves, sculptures and pictures. Beware of the hot floor if you visit in the middle of the day, you have to leave your shoes with a man - who needs paying! - and the ground is very hot outside the caves. Make sure you buy your tickets from the office at the bottom of the hill before you climb up!
