“Good start before Sigiriya”
Reviewed June 27, 2012

Wasn't a hard climb up - very gradual. The place itself is in fair condition - they really should try to do some serious restoration work for the price of admission they charge.
Beware of the monkeys - once you start feeding them, they get a little too friendly. Fair number of traders trying to sell their ware but not very pushy so a polite "no thanks" or "not interested" will steer them away.

“Very interesting to hear about the history”
Reviewed June 23, 2012

Was very hot for our trip there so take some water. Try to pay a guide so you get a better insight, its not expensive.

“Incredible statues”
Reviewed June 23, 2012

A must for anyone going to Sri Lanka. It is along walk up to the top, although with the newer stairs much easier than it used to be. Remember that you need to take the payment slip with you or else you will not be allowed in.

It has been a World Heritage Site since 1991 and is the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka. It is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex on the island. There are 5 main caves, which contain statues and paintings mostly of the Buddha and his life. There are 153 Buddha statues, 3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 statues of other gods and goddesses. There are murals on all walls and ceilings of the caves and cover an area of 2,100 square metres. The painting include the temptation by the demon Mara, and Buddha's first sermon.

When busy the temple caves can get really crowded so pick a less busy time to get the most of your visit.

“The Lord's adornment”
Reviewed June 18, 2012

Though an ugly modern temple now dominates the grounds, topped by an equally ugly and sour looking statue of our Lord the Buddha, the caves remain a treasure of intellectual and emotional delight. From the depths of the caves colours glow like the lotus grows from mud, and make statues and paintings come alive. Come! But avoid Buddhist holidays - too crowded.

“Fascinating temple that's definitely worth a visit”
Reviewed June 17, 2012

Amazing place to visit - if you can, go early in the day to enjoy the best views from the top of the temple. Also well worth hiring a guide since there's so much to find out about the various periods of time represented by the artwork and reliquary in the caves.

Well worth a couple of hours if you're in the area.
