“Comfort with Road Access, yet beautiful.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 5, 2011

This is a place on the highway. With Sri Lanka Celebrating 2600 years of Buddhism, it was a tiresome night with the traffic and honking the whole night outside your room. The hotel otherwise is a good value for money option and fits the mid-range family travelers. The pool used to have good views, but some boulders have been permanently placed outside the pool boundary which has blocked the plantation view it had on one side. The restaurant is ethnic and class offering a mix of continental and sri Lankan cuisine. It also has a souvenir shop and a cake shop for guests and for public. The staff is courteous and the receptionist will try and converse with you in your language. She will share a tip or two for the kind of clothing which has to be worn on an auspicious day, which helped in the day tour a lot. The air conditioning is a bit too weak but the rooms are spacious and clean.

The rooms and the hotel looks very nice, swimming pool is cleaned by picking out the leaves of the water and Rs 7000 for a double is not cheap. The breakfast serving was very slow and half of what they offer wasn't available. The free bikes weren't available. Food and drinks were expensive (Rs 440 for a big tea for 2 persons). The Bakehouse (BBH) is recommended for the food, friendly waiters, lovely food and very cheap). Also you don't get fresh towels or blankets when you stay more than one night.

Gimanhala was great. Very good value for money, friendly staff and fantastic location for all the sightseeing and touring in the cultural triangle.

It gets quite crowded around lunchtime with visiting groups, but at night its a slower more relaxed pace and we spend mornings touring and relaxed during late afternoon (when we had the small pool to ourselves). The evening set menu got quite boring so we had to discuss and get other options, but the staff were very open to suggestions and flexible.

Room Tip: We found the upstair rooms better than those downstairs

Dambulla and the Gimanhala Hotel were our base for visiting Dambulla, Sigiriya and Polonnoruwa (and then heading on to stay in Anuradhapura). There aren't a lot of choices for accommodation in the area and they all seemed overpriced. We chose the Gimanhala because it seemed central and it had a swimming pool and wifi. Well, you don't always get what you expect...but we ended up happy with what we got... (read on)

The big disappointment was that the wifi was "broken" when we arrived. (We had confirmed just a day earlier that they did, indeed, have wifi.) We complained, noting that we came to the hotel in large part for the wifi and were paying a lot more than we had elsewhere in Sri Lanka. (Our room, including breakfast and all taxes was 8800 rupees/night.) The staff couldn't solve the wifi problem but they went out of there way to help us. In addition to calling in the wifi repair man, they offered to let us use their computer (with internet access) for free (instead of the usual 200 rupees/hour). We explained that we needed to use our computer in order to upload photos and they worked out a way for us to plug in to their internet. It meant that we had to work in the lobby rather than in the comfort of our room but we really appreciated that they went above and beyond to ameliorate the situation.

That wasn't our only problem, but they fixed the other one as well. When we arrived, our room smelled like sewage. We saw that the toilet was leaking. They immediately came to clean it up and agreed to give us a new room. Problem solved.

Once we were in our fresh-smelling room, we appreciated the high ceiling, ceiling fan, air-conditioning, TV, and updated, tasteful decor. The rooms are clean and rather charming -- though they would benefit from some brighter lights for reading.

We also loved the beautiful, warm pool. The poolside restaurant is overrun by tour groups at lunch time (but the excellent staff still served us quickly). In the evening, though, we had it almost to ourselves and enjoyed excellent rice and curry. Our kids found plenty of "western" options on the menu as well.

And, finally, the location was, indeed, excellent. Just across the street we could catch a bus to Sigiriya or Polonnoruwa or buy snacks or groceries. Within Dambulla itself, it's a short tuk tuk ride to the beautiful cave temple.

Overall, the Gimanhala turned out to be a lovely hotel -- thanks in large part to the attentive and kind staff.

Disapointing room - very dark and no balcony or veranda, but large pool with nice seating area. On main road but no problems with traffic noise. Seemed to cater predominantly for tour groups.

The Gimanhala is a very nice hotel, with most courtious welcome, very good service, best restaurant in town. The rooms are large , very clean, and rather quiet if you ask tro be as far as possible from the road. The pool is large and is very nice after a long morning or day visiting the sites of the cultural triangle. It is a perfect base to visit all the Unesco sites in that region. The ratio price/quality is very good
