Owner description: At 300 feet, it is the third biggest stupa in Anuradhapura.

All the previous postings have covered stuff and I can add no more as to the legend, or facts of construction. The size and grandeur can not be conveyed in word or picture. Make sure you take your socks, as they are acceptable to wear in a shoe free zone, especially when the ground is far too hot for soft 'westerner s' feet. Oh and the traditional Buddhist way is to travel in a clock wise direction around the stupas.

Built also by king Dutugemunu - being his most famous contruction. It is about 90m high and 91m in diameter. It was meant to house the begging bowl of the Buddha.
The story behind the stupa:
Dutugemunu is said to have overseen the work personally, being present at the construction of the relic chamber and the interring of the bowl itself.
A common folk tale surrounding the death of King Dutugemunu is that as he was dying he was told that Ruwanweliseya was completed in order to keep him happy. The well-intentioned plan went awry, however, when Dutugemunu asked to be shown the finished building. His brother Tissa had the entire building draped in white cloth to present the illusion of whitewash, and due to his failing eyesight Dutugemunu did not spot the difference, dying convinced that the building was finished.

A really beautiful creation by King Dutugemunu which is very close to the Sri Maha Bodhiya.

Ruwanweli Seya, along with Jethavanarama & Mirisavetiya were built aligning the star constellation of Orion's Belt. the only other place in the world that this phenomena happens is in Egypt with the 3 great pyramids.

It's a total serene feeling that engulfs you, once you're at any of these places.

Built by Great King Dutugamunu, this masterpiece shows the world the skills and know how of the ancient Sri Lanka before the arrival of Portuguese, Dutch and English. When you walk around and see the angles and curvatures of the Dagoba, it is amazingly equal at every position you place yourself. Scaling and the size of the creation is equal or higher to Pyramids in Egypt and should recognise as equally or higher.
