“Colonial Memories”
Reviewed November 1, 2012

This had been an old Colonial Mansion, situated in the Ancient Ruined City itself, thereby, making it the ideal centre point to see the ruins and the sacred city.

The Rooms are large, with equally large bathrooms with good fittings. Linen is very clean and has 4 poster beds in each room. Outside the rooms there is a long verandah enabling a guest to totally unwind after a day out.

The garden is awesome with old trees and a vast expanse with birds.

Meals are good, but needs innovation in the chef's department. the service is very courteous. The cutlery and crockery is very good. The restaurant is open type and appropriate with the location.

Deserves at least one visit.

Room Tip: Downstairs with the Garden view

Seven of us stayed here November 2011,( on our way on a tour) -in the
refurbished rooms. The bedrooms & bathrooms & the linen were
spotlessly clean. Good showers & plenty of hot water. Comfortable
beds ensured that we all a very restful night.

The food was good. The table linen however was not too clean - we would
have asked for a fresh set - if we were staying on longer.
My niece & her friends spent 2 nights here in sept.2012 and made
the same comments.
We were surprised at the very unfavourable comments made by some -
seems very unfair and exaggerated. May be they stayed in the section
under repair - which was probably being given out at a much lower
price.

I stayed overnight at the Tissawewa Grand as it is called. It is the old Govenors's residence from the colonial days, and retains some old world charm. I have to say that I have read the other comments, and I am sorry that some people had a not too pleasant experience, for I had a wonderful dinner, excellent undisturbed sleep and a most satisfying breakfast.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, which was heightened by the excellent service by the staff, under the leadership of the Manager Mr Hemantha Gunasekara. As for the price, my party was three adults and three children, and the cost was just over 11,000 LKR. Hardly an exorbitant price.

If you are looking for a Colombo style hotel, then you will be disappointed, but if you wish to just chill then the Tissawewa is an excellent choice. I will certainly be staying again in the future, and will be recommending the Tissawewa to friends and family alike.

We enjoyed our stay here- the hotel is set in its own grounds- very quiet and beautiful. We stayed in the newly refurbished rooms that are clean and spacious. We did get rain coming into the bathroom when it poured but no real problems. The food was good but the table cloth looked dirty when we arrived and was even worse when we left. The staff were helpful and friendly.

Could it get worse, yes monkey dung all over the outside porch and a night of killer mosquitoes.

This is a terrible terrible hotel and frankly you could not pay me to stay here again.

don't be fooled like we were by its great location, pretty architecture, etc.

As mentioned in a previous review, table clothes remain filthy. Most uninviting location.
Furniture old and worn and patrons are probably 'at risk' from using it. No hot water for three days that I stayed. Rooms basic and shabby and the last day the room was not serviced at all, so after a long day we were faced with cold water and wet towels from previous day. The one area where they were very efficient was in charging very high rates.
I made my feelings about the place very clear to the 'Manager' but I doubt if anything will change. If accommodation is now very limited in the area, visitors will have very little choice and will continue to be 'Ripped Off'
To sum up, very poor value for money.

The hotel is set in a beautiful park full of monkeys and fireflies at night and looks pretty. The rooms were only barely clean though, the mosquito nets were torn and the walls still bore traces of dead mosquitos. Service was poor and we were told at breakfast (a very frugal one) we had to choose between fruit juice or fresh fruit. We expected much better for rooms that were priced at USD97 a night!!! Avoid that place.
