“Impressive or not, you NEED to see it!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2014

The bodhi tree itself is not that impressive. It is not particularly good looking or graceful. Its branches are very gnarled, its bark is very rough, and it just shows LOTS of signs of aging. Course, what do you expect for a tree that's hundreds of years old? But the sheer historical significance of it is enough to make any visit to the tree absolutely compulsory for anyone visiting Sri Lanka. It is, after all, more or less the heart and soul of the country. This tree was descended from the very tree that Buddha meditated under and as such is absolutely sacred to Sri Lankans, who, in my honest opinion, seem the most conservative and committed Buddhists I have ever encountered. One cannot truly understand Sri Lankan culture until one is truly aware of how important Buddhism is and how hard Sri Lankans have fought to latch onto it. And it is really hard to get that awareness without beholding this most sacred of Sri Lankan treasures.

“Bodhi tree from India”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 24, 2013 via mobile

Buddha got enlightened in the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, Bihar, India. Its sapling is this Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura. It was brought here around 500 years back according to our taxi driver.

You'll see priests chanting Mantras and lot of religious folks here. Overall a nice place to vuvisit when in Anuradhapura.

“Memorable visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 14, 2013

Although the tree per se looks rather ordinary, the veneration locals have towards it is something worth experiencing. It is wonderful to see that a tree is still reverenced in some places of this world. The tree is also in the way to the ancient sacred city of Anuradhapura, so I would recommend a first stop here.
