We love the holy atmosphere and the temple monkeys there. But feel a bit like invaders, because there were a lot of local people worshipping. We didn`t pay any entrance fee,i think it`s free of entrance fee.At the most places the Sri Lankan departments take pretty high prices from tourists. But there nobody controls tickets.Inside on the yard there was a ticket-counter,but the guy was sleeping with his head on the table.

That is exactly what it is. A tree and a statue. Historical, of course. The tree has fallen down due to age. There is nothing else to see apart from the status. May be a 15 min stopover.

Sacred Sri Maha Bodiya, 2,300 year old site - Visited this National Heritage site as part of a 17-day Bunnik tour.
Note: Shoulders & knees covered + Rupees for the person who looks after your shoes + you might like to have an old pair of socks to wear as the ground does get quite hot + 200 Rupee entry charge.
Fold the leaf of the Bodi tree and it represents many shapes = Stupa, Dagaba, Pagoda, etc.
An interesting site to visit.

Having visited Bodh Gaya it was fascinating to see the "son" or "daughter" of the original tree. This is older than the one now in place in Bihar where the Buddha was enlightened. Yet it is also protected behind railings and propped up with gold struts. In addition there is a guardian force comprised of those descendants of locals who protected the tree during various incursions.

At the time of our visit there was a pilgrimage by the military comprised solely of officers. It did seem slightly incongruous with the juxtaposition of peace/enlightenment with arms.

This was an amazing experience. We went there in the evening and the place was packed with people. Monks surrounded the Bodhi tree meditating. It was amazing to witness such devotion and serenity all in one place. We had a guide with us, so he explained the history behind the place. I recommend to go there with a guide, otherwise you cannot grasp the history behind this magical place.
