“Perfectly adequate”
Reviewed March 5, 2014

We stayed here one night in order to visit the historic Anuradhapura sites. I hadn't expected much from the hotel and was pleasantly surprised. Service was, on the whole, fine (on one occasion the man behind the bar disappeared for a while). And we were a bit annoyed to be told repeatedly that there were no mosquitos in our room, so it wouldn't matter than one of our twin beds didn't have a mosquito net, when in fact there were... Other than that, our room and bathroom were fine. The dinner buffet had good vegetarian curry dishes, which we stuck to. Wine (mostly New World) was available by the glass at a reasonable price. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and adequate.
We enjoyed the pool - a welcome way of cooling down on a very hot day.
We left immediately after breakfast in the morning and thought the hotel was ideal for what we needed - a stopover in Anuradhapura.

After a 5 hour trip from the southeast of Sri Lanka, "within" an ectic traffic, from Ahungalla to Annapadura (first Ceylan capital), this resort (that strangely is rated only 3 stars...), was heaven! The resort was done from scratch at an old rice plantation, and full of trees and bushes at a beautiful garden, including a small lake where wild elephants come to drink at nightfall. The rooms are 3 per bungalow and each with a dozel bed (but we didn't notice mosquitos...). Very friendly staff and cute restaurant and main building. The pool is a huge kind of simple water reservoir, with a touch of south european design.

On our way to Jetavanaramaya, Anuradhapura from Sigiriya, we reached this hotel around 1:30 p.m. for lunch, after a visit to a pretty batik factory shop on the way. The atmosphere at this hotel is very nice. The dining area overlooks the pool on one side and trees and greenery around. There is wooded area outside the hotel premise too. The buffet menu also had a good variety of vegetarian food which majority of our group of 30+ people were accustomed to. Another aspect which I liked about the lunch was that the dining area and where the buffet was arranged were separate adjacent places.

Eat at this hotel yesterday. The place is smart, but a bit gloomy due to all the dark wood and the fact that there were not many guests. It also certainly seems to cater to toor groups so don't expect a romantic meal. Having said that, the food - we had the buffet - was ok and it seems to be a good choice for a hotel restaurant. We had local food which was nice and spicy rather then having been europeanised.

We arrived to witness a guest complaining about the noise.

On inspection of the hotel grounds it became clear there was major building work being done. By this the rooms (cottage style accommodation) had been gutted completely to a shell of a building.

Both sides of the hotel had major building work being carried out.

In reception area we could not use the public toilets, they were closed at time of arrival due to work being carried out. There were minor repairs being carried out here, which we initially believed the guest was complaining about as it was noisy work. This was not the case.

At the pool there where you could not relax due to a mini digger or two and several cement mixers at a cottage under refurbishment, room was just a shell.

We were advised that the ex president was staying here (new job probably over seeing the work, or easily pleased - probably arrived and left before work started up, and not one for sitting by the pool).

There is a small chapel in the grounds and the hotel backs onto the lake (tank). Elephants come here to drink water in the night.

The room we were given was excellent as it was one of the newly refurbished ones, but that does not excuse having to suffer being on a building site, and sitting by the pool while workmen are stripping the accommodation next to the pool, back to a shell of a building.

When finished if the same standard is applied, which looks like they may be making all the accommodation into cottages, then this should be a very nice hotel.

We had no problems in the restaurant, but the check in was slow and our room was not ready.

Not offered but requested by myself, due to the building work, and received were complimentary soft drinks throughout stay, of one night, which amounted to 4 drinks. A complimentary plate of fruit was left in our room, not requested.

We were not informed by our tour operator about the building work prior to departure.

Hotel also seems to be used by tour operators for one night stay, and they leave before the work starts and arrive after dark, due to the type of lighting throughout the grounds, in the dark you could miss the fact that the accommodation next to yours has no windows in and is a shell of a building, and work has stopped for the night.

And it is not the only hotel in the area there are others, which appear to have good standards. The reason the tour operators use the reply "this is the best hotel, in the area" is because they have a contract with this hotel.

Room Tip: If you find yourself in accommodation where building work is going on and you have not been notified...
