Alakamanda had great staff, nice new small hotel.

It's not a luxury property nor does it say it is, but it is a fantastic above-budget offering. It is clean, new, and the staff and friendly and surprisingly the restaurant for dinner was great.

The hotel didn't have driver accommodation but they organised some nearby which was terrific. It was a great spot for us to go visit nearby locations, but not in the heart of town for people who want to walk around.

Anuradhapura is a tourist spot - so don't expect too much!

Alakamanda is located off the track, which is fine. At presence it only serves 6 rooms, the pool is under construction - and that can be quite noisy.

The place is new, but the building quality is bad and therefore it already looks used. The rooms are very basic, the bathroom really nice. But the cleanness is a problem! The bed sheets were full of spots (so were the !!! 2 !!! towels), dirty. We asked them to exchange - but the new once were not much cleaner. There's no safety box in the room. The room features a small terrace - but sitting there is a problem due to too many mosquitoes.

The menu was limited to European fare. We asked them for Sri Lankan food and they prepared for us. The curries were really nice - much better than the tourist food we got for lunch (better eat at Pizza Hut for lunch than visiting these terrible tourist restaurants down town). The included breakfast was pretty standard - but at additional price they'll prepare you Sri Lankan breakfast.

Would I stay there again? No, especially due to the cleanness of towels and bed sheets.

On arrival we were bomardard with mosquitoes...the hotel had obviously had issues with water ingress. Th room smelt damp and the walls were stained from water. we were really disappointed with the hotel baring in mind it was so new. There is only one communal area to sit and thats the restaurant but it closes at 10pm, you therefore have no alternative but to either go to bed or sit outside your room in the garden to be eaten alive. It would be nice to have at least one couch to sit in the evening away from your room. The bed linen was very cheap and its the first hotel I have ever stayed in where there was no mattress cover therefore you could see straight through the sheet..not really a comfortable nights sleep. There is one plus when staying here, the food is very good..in fact excellent. The breakfast was delicious.
But overall we were disappointed.

This was our second hotel in our tour in Sri Lanka.
We made the booking by phone, getting a better price than in the booking sites.
They were really nice and took us from the train station.
Hotel is a bit far from the city center, so if you want to go there you would need to arrange a taxi or bike (but when we were there the weather was really hot!).
Room was nice, but considering it is a new hotel, the room doesn't look new... (well, after ending our trip, it looked newer than the rest ...)... I guess it is a bad building work, if you guess what i am trying to say...
But, in the other hand, it is really clean so no complaints at all about it.
Food was great. We had almost all our meals there, and we liked all of them.
The restaurant is open air, and it is a problem, cause there are lots of bugs... (same problem in the room if you keep the door open)... They provide mosquito spray if you ask for it in the room, but no solution for the restaurant bugs (which is a pity, cause it is great being there)...
We booked a guide for two days with them, to visit the ancient places. I think it was a bit expensive, but have to say, the guide was really professional and his explanations were great, so we were happy to learn more things than the ones we could have known with our LP.

One recommendation: we booked a driver for four days through them. When we booked we told them we would choose our own hotels and places to stay, which wasn't a big problem... But at the end of the trip, the driver asked us for more money, telling us that was his brother (?) who was telling that. He said the last hotel we stayed in hadn't provided food and that if we wanted him to stay till the next morning in Kandy (as we had booked) we had to pay about 2.000 Rs. more....
We didn't pay and only gave him (of course, the next day, after dropping us at the station) what we have agreed in Alakamanda.
After all of that, have to say the driver was really nice, and we didn't have any problems with him, only this one, which i think was organised by somebody from outside...
So, only be firm. It isn't only a question of money, it's a question of making business and how to deal with it... any where in the world!

Will I recommend Alakamanda? Probably yes. If they solve two or three problems, they will be an excellent hotel.

We arrived around mid night. The staff were a bit slow (as they missed our request for extra bed despite calling in advance) and made us sit around in the mosquito ridden lobby for nearly 20-30 minutes! But the room itself was great and the bathroom was well set up and lit! The breakfast was great too and it's a good 10 minute car ride from the sights to see in Anuradhapura. If biking, you may want to think about the distance!
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip: The attractions of Anuradhapura are a bit overpriced (per day to look around for 1 day!!). Cycling might be a good way to do it but be prepared for a long, tiring and hot day. Food options are very so so.

We stayed two nights at this small, friendly hotel. It isn't the easiest place to find, but once there it is friendly and relaxing. The six modern rooms are all ground floor, in the garden, and have very good aircon. The manager and staff are excellent, and the breakfasts and dinner are freshly cooked and very appetising. They also looked after our driver very well, which is important, and offered a quick laundry turnaround service. In addition, they arranged an outstanding guide for the ancient city of Anuradhapura, a must if you are to make the most of your visit .
Highly recommended.

The hotel itself and room was nice. The only complaint would be that there are a lot of mosquitoes in the area, and they seemed to manage to make it into the room somehow (just a few). Other than that, I thought the staff was great and had unusually good English. In addition, although they didn't have Sri Lankan food on their menu, we requested curries, and received a great feast! Most importantly for us, we requested that the food be spicy, and they made it the way we requested.
The hotel is away from the main town, but for us that was great- it meant we could go walking without too much traffic, and the neighborhood was quiet at night. Definitely would stay here again if we were in town!
